I have recently been tested for HSV and the results were as follows: HSV 1 IGG Type Specific AB 0.18 and HSV 2 IGG Type specific AB >5.00 H The tests were conducted during my first breakout. I was, of course shocked and was told by my physician that the breakout was likely caused by the drugs (solumedrol and steroids) that I was given while being treated for a severe case (hospitalized) of pneumonia. Where my question comes in is that I also had a severe case (hospitilized) of pneumonia, along with plural effusion, nineteen months ago and was given the same drugs (solumedrol and steriods) at that time, but did not have a breakout. Can it be assumed then that the initial HSV 2 exposure came between the two bouts of pneumonia or is it true that I will never know when I was exposed?
Rarely people will find out if they are positive for HSV-2 and when. It could be the case th same medicine was used to cause an outbreak before would have in the past but that is not 100% accurate since the virus lays dormant and may not have reactiviated during that time.
The best thing to do would get with your partners and have them be checked for HSV-2 infections and then you will know the source.
