Exposure to HSV types

by Lynn84, Sep 25, 2008 06:42PM
When I was young girl I had the chicken pox. As a teen at times I would get cold sores on my nose, in my nose, or on my lips, but never in my mouth. I've been really sick lately and I'm getting over it now and I have developed two very close to each other. I've been doing some reading lately on the internet and some sites say that chicken pox is a type of Herpes Simplex Virus. I was wondering if HSV-1 and the chicken pox are inter-related in any way? The articles that I've read say that " most americans are infected with the HSV-1 by the age of 10 years old". If not, how is it possible for someone to contract HSV-1, if it is not a STD? I have noticed that I only get these break outs when I'm getting over an illness. I was under the impression that this was a way for the cold/illness to come out. Also, how is it possible for a person to have HSV-1 located in their genital areas?

There are 8 different human herpes viruses.  The only thing they have in common is that once you get them, you have them forever hence why they are grouped into the same family of viruses. Other than that, they have nothing in common with each other.

Hsv1 orally is not a std.  It's transmitted thru kissing as an adult and as a child you can get it from sharing food and drinks and sucking on toys that were just in your playmate's mouth and such.  It's incredibly common all over the world.  Even though you only notice recurrences when you are sick ( hence the nickname cold sores and fever blisters of course ), you are still periodically shedding the virus in between obvious cold sores and you can transmit it potentially to a partner either orally or genitally thru performing oral sex on them.
