G-HSV 2 after GHSV-1 or a recurrent outbreak?

Hello All,

I just came out of doctor’s appointment where she prescribed me Valtrex, but did not do any tests for HSV 1 or 2. She said that the blood tests are unreliable, that it’s all the same, and that she didn’t see anything in my vagina that she could swab for a test. I have had swelling inside my vagina, and some itching externally since the beginning of August, that goes away when treated with yeast medicine for 1-2 weeks, and then comes back. She believes that since my yeast/BV/Trich/Chlamydia/Gonorrhea tests all came back negative, and the fact that I have been coughing up phlegm when experiencing this symptoms that it must be herpes.

Now, unbeknownst to her (since she has done a poor job of taking in my medical history), I know I have GHSV 1. I had an initial, painful typical outbreak 6 years ago, and fortunately have had no problems or symptoms since.  However, the symptoms I have been experiencing feel NOTHING like my previous OB, and really feels more like a yeast infection.

However, I am now concerned---wondering if it’s a recurring outbreak, or new HSV 2 infection. I know my first OB 6 years ago was HSV1 via blood test, and my boyfriend having a cold sore and giving me oral sex.

Has anyone ever has GSHV 1 to be re-infected with HSV2 later? What do your OB’s loo like in comparison to your initial OB? And lastly, what are the verdicts on blood tests? I would like to get IgG test, since the one I took six years ago was completed negative  for HSV 2. Any thoughts or insight o the matter would be much appreciated!

Yes you can acquire hsv2 even if you have hsv1. Your Dr doesn't seem to swift. I would have an igg hsv2 type specific blood test. Sometimes hsv2 tests can give a very low positive number for folks with hsv1. This is because it is a very sensitive test and can pickup the hsv1 antibodies. I would still do the test. Keep me informed on your results and we can go from there
