Genital HSV-1

Hello,

I've recently been diagnosed with Genital HSV-1. I have a few questions I am unclear about. I'm currently on 500mg of Valtrex daily because I do not want to risk transmitting this to my partner. My first question is, how likely is it that this will be passed on to my partner genitally? Is it even a possibility, or can it only be transmitted to his mouth? Secondly, if I stop taking the Valtrex daily does this mean I should expect more outbreaks? I've only ever had one outbreak, but I had flu-like symptoms and about 4 very painful blisters, and enlarged and swollen lymph nodes. Is it necessary to take serious precautions, or is this something that is not very transmissible? Help!

he needs to be tested. a lack of obvious cold sores is meaningless as far as his status.

were you diagnosed with hsv1 prior to meeting him? if you were, you also have to make sure of his hsv2 status too to protect yourself!

If I stop taking Valtrex will that cause outbreaks now that I've been on it for a month?! Also, he has not been tested but he doesn't ever get cold sores.. That's why I am so confused!

we really don't recommend daily suppressive therapy for hsv1 genitally. it on average doesn't reoccur very often and doesn't shed much so you don't get enough "bang for your buck" to make suppressive therapy worth it.

has your partner been tested to know his own status or does he have a history of cold sores?
