Genital HSV1 transmition to oral??

by MissLost, Feb 10, 2009 09:54AM
I contracted HSV1 genitally from my boyfriend who had no symptoms. He still doesn't know if he has it genitally or orally. But he just broke up with me after almost 4 years and I am lost, I don't know how to  get past not being comfortable with my body and becoming sexually active with someone else. I have read that HSV1 genital to gential transmition is exremly rare but what if someone else were to do oral on me? what are those risks and how can transmition be minimized?

Chances are good that your bf transmitted hsv1 to your genital area thru performing oral sex on you.  Only a small percentage of cases are trasnmitted from genitals to genitals. Unless you get an obvious cold sore too, no way to know if your hsv1 is just genital or if it's both places.   When talking about this with a potential future partner - let them know that you know you have it genitally but you are unaware of if you also have it orally and go from there. If your partner already has hsv1, no reason to worry about either location :)

But what if a new partner does oral on me, how big of a risk is that for him to contract it orally?

Hsv1 genitally doesn't shed very often - only 3% of days. The risk of transmitting it from your genitals to the genital or oral area on a partner is very, very low. If your partner is concerned, you can utilize barrier protection when he performs oral sex on you. If he's already hsv1+ himself, it's not an issue.
