Genital HSV1

I received oral sex from someone who gets cold sores. I don't believe he had a cold sore at the time but I've been reading that you can still contract genital HSV 1 even if there is no sore present, due to shedding and whatnot. It's been 2 months and I haven't had any obvious symptoms (sores, blisters). I've never had a cold sore myself although I realize you can carry HSV1 and not present any symptoms. I've been feeling a bit tender, red, and itchy down there for the past week and I'm not sure it's because I've been freaking out about this or maybe it's another non-STD related issue. I went and got a full STD test today (blood, urine, and throat swab) and I should get the results in a week although I don't know if they're testing for HSV antibodies in my blood. How likely is it that I contracted genital HSV1 from this encounter? Is the fact that I haven't had any symptoms over a month after the incubation period any indication that I should be in the clear? Any advice/information would be appreciated because I'm quite distressed by this. Thanks!

No it snot common to not have any symptoms. Dr.HHH , a leading expert on the subject, says most people have symptoms they just think itbis something else. And yes hsv1 genitally or orally the primary infection is usually cery noticable in adults. 2-20 no infection then recurrence? Again if you were to ever have symptoms first infection is the most likely one to be noticed. If no symptoms present at 2-20 days without any outbreak  a 1 in a 10.000 risk exposure no testing is needed. There is a higher chance you will get a false positive than actually having hsv1. Relax:)

Thank you for your help. I'm trying to convince myself I'm being irrational and I'm probably fine but it's hard when the risk is there.

Another thing I'd like to clear up. When you have your first outbreak of genital HSV-1 is it always obvious? I think some sources say you're gonna have the full blown sores/lesions and it will be painful and you can't miss it, while other sources say some people never have an initial outbreak so they don't know they have it.

Is it common to not have an initial outbreak within the 2-20 day incubation period and then have one, say, a few months later? Or if you don't have the initial outbreak within the incubation period is it safe to assume you don't have genital herpes and/or won't ever experience an obvious outbreak?

Thank you!

8 weeks is a good indicator and 12 weeks is conclusive you are 60% likely to be positive hsv1 like we all are but that means with absence of real symptoms oral past infection.

Well I'm going to go to the doctors this week because there is something going on down there that's causing a light burning sensation. Could just be irritation because I've been inspecting myself so often the past few days. In terms of the herpes then, would you suggest I get a blood test even though it's been 2 months since possible exposure and no sores/blisters? I'm just worried because if I'm HSV-1 positive then I'll probably continue to worry.

Its common for hum because he is a doctor who deals with many patients. Yes up yo 60% of nee genital herpes infection are because of oral sex but still we have to realize that the ratio of genital sex to hsv2 transmission is higher than oral to genital hsv1 transmission. The increased amount of genital hsv1 infection is because people know hsv1 is cold sores and dont kiss children and those children who grow up have more oral sex assuming its safe. Still a single exposure isnt anything to be concerned abiut unless there are symptoms. And no skight burning isnt necessarily a herpes symptom. In your case i would say its anxiety

When I went for an STD test I asked the doctor about the risk and how common it is and he just said "it's not uncommon." Last night I felt a persistent burning (stinging?) sensation on one area of my vulva. I'm not sure if that's an indicator of anything. I've been having a lot of anxiety about this situation over the last week but before that I never really gave much thought to this cause I wasn't aware of the oral-to-genital transmission risk. I'm not even sure of my partner's status. After I received oral sex from him I noticed he had cold sore medication or something on his desk but he didn't appear to have any symptoms. This is driving me crazy. I don't know if I'm being paranoid or if I should be worried.

But for a single exposure with no sores present risk is negligible

Hi, you can get HSV by the shredding without having a cold sore being present. I have this debate all the time with people. But you can get it. Also, it could take a month anywhere to years for anything to show.  For the blood test for HSV, you have to specifically ask for it,yet I had doctor's tell my boyfriend he would always come up false/positive because the blood work isn't accurate for HSV unless you have the sore cultured. You can ask your doctor to see what they say.  I wouldn't worry about it.
