Genital HSV1

by DellA17, Jan 23, 2009 06:56PM
How common is it to contract genital HSV1 during oral sex from a male to female?  I received oral sex from and three days later I developed herpes.  I just had my first genital outbreak, I received a culter the very next day I noticed the never before seen sores in my vaginal region. I'm sure my boyfriend of two years has oral HSV1, because he's had sores on his mouth before....unfortunately I was uneducated on transmission of HSV1. I've had other sex partners but I've never had genital sore and I've never had sores on my mouth. Is it possible for me to have had HSV2 for all these years and never have any outbreaks and be asymptomatic for all these years?  I just took a blood test this past week and waiting for the results.

I'm just nervous, because there's some much information on the internet about herpes 1 and 2 that it gets confusing at times.

Thanks

It is most likely to be HSV1 you have contracted from your b/f if he has it Orally,it is fairly common for transmission of type 1 to happen via Oral sex ..... You will know better which type it is when your culture comes back,it is possible to have HSV2 for a very long time and not know about it due to having no symptoms, but in your case I'd say it was pointing more to being HSV1 ..... You say you already had a culture taken? what was the result of that ?

When the culture came back the doctor just confirmed that I had herpes. I asked which one HSV 1 or 2 and she said the test was just done to confirm the herpes virus and not types specific. She said I would need to come in for a blood test for determine if it was HSV 1 or 2. I did the blood test this past Wednesday and I'm just waiting for the results. I'm just really scared, this is my first experience with an STD. I would be a bit relieved if it was HSV1 instead of 2 because from what I've read the breakouts with HSV1 are less common than HSV2. My first breakout was very painful and I would rather not have to experience that again or often.

Thanks for the quick response! I really appreciate it!

You need to have your bf go and get tested for herpes too to be sure that he only has hsv1.  If your first ob was fairly recent, the blood test won't help you know your type unless this really is something you had since before him and this was just your first obvious recurrence. You both need tested anyways so he might as well get tested now too.

My first OB was one week before my blood test. So what you're saying is that the blood test will not give me a specific types? Every thing I read says that a blood test needs to be done within the first six weeks of the initial OB, in order to get a type specific and to see if it is a recent infection or if it's an old infection. Are you saying what I'm reading is incorrect?

You can search here for herpes igm on medhelp or even just check out our "what you need to know about herpes but were afraid to ask" health page for more info. the igm test which supposedly tells new vs old infection is a bad test and shouldn't ever be used.  if your igg is negative when diagnosed and then + a few months later, then it's a newly acquired infection most likely. the only way the igg is helpful for that is if you get your first one drawn at the time of your symptoms.  the window of opportunity for that to be helpful even can be as little as 2 weeks after infection.  Blood tests done 1 week after symptoms won't reflect a newly acquired infection with herpes which is why your partner getting tested is the best idea at this point.
