Genital Herpes On Face
I was diagnosed with HSV 2 which affects my face (From oral sex I am guessing -.-)- The initial outbreak was really bad which spread from my chin all around my face. Now when I get an outbreak it's in one spot- On my chin.
I have gotten about 8 outbreaks in the last 14 months, all of which were pretty bad. I am now on 'Valtrex' which I take one tablet daily.
so my question is- Will the recurrences of outbreaks lesson over time? And also could the Valtrex prevent future outbreaks? Because 8 outbreaks in just over a year is alot, and when it leaves red raw marks which dont go away, it's really frustrating.
I am an 18 year old male, and also I have never had any outbreaks of this on my genitals, or even symptoms of it.

No, she has not been tested. I told her everything that was going on, and encouraged her to be tested, but she was too scared. She is now my ex girlfriend, but I think I should still ecourage her to be tested.

I was just wondering something else, are they symptoms of HSV I the same as HSV II? Do they look the same? Because the doctor didn't actually say that I had HSV II he just said that 'It is the Herpes virus'. But when it first broke out, a different doctor asked me whether or not I had had oral sex- which is why I think it is HSV II.
But is it possible for someone to break out really bad from HSV I? Or is it usually just the common cold sore on the lip?
Once again I am definitly going to be getting ALL the answers at my next doctors appointment, but that's a month away :s.

Has the girl you suspect you got this from tested for herpes to know her own status?
Acyclovir is the original herpes antiviral. It's been a cheap generic for years now which is why it's so much cheaper than valtrex. Valtrex is actually an acyclovir prodrug which simplified means that you swallow valtrex and the body converts it into acyclovir inside the body so that you get more active medicine available to kick some herpes butt in your body which is why you don't have to take it as often. You get the same results from taking acyclovir, just you have to take it more often. If you read the full prescribing info on the valtrex website, you'll see that it actually had to compare itself to acyclovir to show that it works just as well :)
They can type a lesion culture wrong but the odds of it saying it was herpes and it wasn't are very low. You can ask for symptoms to be recultured for herpes too if you want.

Oh and also (sorry for the double post). It's weird, I have only been sexually active with one girl who has only had the one sexual partner before me- they had sex twice I think (unprotected). But I was having unprotected sex with her for about a year before and had no symptoms of herpes I also had oral sex a few times before too and nothing..
So it was over a year of the same sexual activity, before I had any trouble with my face. And she has never had anything that resembles genital herpes before.
I was just wondering how accurate the tests are? The derm said it was the HSV though and I think it is that. But why would it take a year before I showed any symptoms of the virus?
I will tell my doctor all of this when I see him next, but it just doesn't seem right..

Okay thank you I will definitly ask the dermatologist about acyclovir. But is it as effective as Valtrex? Why is it so much cheaper?

Switch to acyclovir. It's under $20/month for suppressive therapy even without insurance.
I know of a few male posters who have had hsv2 on their faces who had a booger of a time with it because of shaving. definitely follow up on this more with the dermatologist and ask them if it's being complicated by something other than just hsv2.

Well I have another Derm appointment in about a month, I will ask more questions. I am pretty sure I get a bacterial infection with it too because my sister got a kind of similair infection on her face, not as bad though. Also anitbiotics do help to clear it up..
With the Valtrex, it costs $250 for like 40 tablets! That's almost $250 a month just taking 1 a day.. I really don't have that much money, at all. So it really ***** because if the Valtrex does work, it's going to send me broke getting it...

Have you been following up on this with a dermatologist at all to make sure that it's all hsv2 going on and not also a bacterial infection too at this point?
Also I'd ask about upping your valtrex to either 1gm daily or 500mg 2x/day and see if that helps more.
