Genital herpes prognosis

Just been diagnosed with genital herpes 2. Have had five recurrences in 3½ months. Valtrex 500 mg didn´t help so now I take 500 mg x 2. What about my future? Is this how it will be? Constant pain and no sex? I need hope. I have none.

How were you diagnoses with herpes? culture? blood type? visual exam from your doctor?

make sure whats really going on is herpes related and not something else that might be bacterial.

Also grace can try and help you with the correct dosage.  I think thats a little low but I am not as good with it as she is.

the valtrex dose is fine.

definitely let us know what testing you've had done so far.

also have you been back at all to be seen and get properly tested for things like yeast and bacterial vaginitis?

Yes. My dr did other test also and the diagnos was confirmed.

at this point I recommend going to see your gyn every time you have genital symptoms. I know it's a pain but it's the best way to get to the bottom of all of this. bacterial vaginosis makes herpes reoccur more often and can even mimick herpes so if you are still having frequent recurrences while on suppressive therapy, time to start thinking other reasons and go from there. make sure they are testing you for vaginal infections each time as well as cultures of your symptoms again isn't a bad idea either.

Yes the suppresive therapy is effective.

another recurrens in spite om Valtrex 1000 mg. Went to ER. They did culture + blood. Will have to wait for results about 1 week.

This doc didn´t think the symptoms was typical of herpes and said it was very unlikely to have this recurrence rate while on Valtrex.

She didnt have any idea of what it might be though.

My own gyne. was sure it was herpes though.

I guess I will know when the test comes back?

I never recommend the ER for these sorts of issues to be honest. It's not their speciality.

see a gyn every time you have symptoms for a thorough exam and testing to try to determine what all is going on.

It was a gyn at the ER. Had no other choice - a friday night. Wanted to have test done when it was still a fresh recurrence.

In your post to Terri you don't mentioned ever being officially diagnosed as having herpes. Have you ever had a positive culture for herpes or not? Did you ever have a blood test?

Just found out today both test where negative (swab from sore + blood test). But my own gyno said she was sure it was herpes! And now this doc at the hospital says it´s not!

I have had symptoms for 4 months. Been taking Valtrex four weeks.

i'd stop the valtrex and be seen every time you have symptoms to try to get to the bottom of this.  testing negative at this point means it's not likely herpes.

sometimes it just sucks to be female :(  so many things can cause us issues with our delicate genitals.
