Geographic Tongue/ HSV1

Geographic Tongue/ HSV1

I was diagnosed with HSV 1 about 2 years ago, about 11 -10 months ago i started to get these
spots on my tongue. They will start out in a small spot with a white ish ring around them, but
a day later they will be bigger and they will change shape. They are painless but they are uncomfertable.
I have been getting them persistantly with only about a week in between outbreaks if that. I always get multiple spots at a time. I have a picture, but its when the sores are starting to heal and go away. They basically moved combined into one big smooth spot on my tongue. Even though i have hsv 1 , i herpes sores on my lips or in my mouth, just get these wierd spots that dont hurt, there just on the top layer of my tongue.
Heres a picture: http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/4807/1000948u.jpg
so does it look like GT tongue or something else?

thanks

This does look like geographic tongue to me, yes.  Not herpes.  Now whether you have oral herpes is an entirely different question.  Have you had any antibody testing?  Generally speaking, after first episode, herpes doesn't cause symptoms on the tongue.  If you've not been tested, you want IgG only (no igM) for HSV 1 and 2 (just so you cover all the bases).  If you are HSV1 positive, then you either have oral infection (more likely) or genital infection (less likely), but it doesn't address THIS issue.  You could ask your provider to swab this area if you are specifically concerned about herpes.

I did when i was first tested, and everything was normal( besides being HSV1 positive).
And yes i have oral herpes, but i never get any kind of herpes sores in my mouth or on my lips, i think ive only have had 1 outbreak since the intial infection. But would having HSV 2 or a genital infection cause something like this on my tongue? Oh and what kind of oral infection do you think it is? like a fungi? Ive had this conditon for a while but i just started dieting for it by not eating any sugar or yeast. Im also wondering if it may be candida?

thank you

OK, so you know that you have HSV 1 already, and you say you've had one outbreak only, was that oral or genital?  I don't think this is HSV 2 orally.  It is not common to get HSV 2 orally, and it you did, it might be asymptomatic because you have HSV 1 already (if it is oral) and also, it would probably look just like a cold sore, not like this.  Hard to say what might be causing this particular presentation.  A dentist might be able to help you sort this out best.

My only out break was orally (first with the initial outbreak, then one time after), But does it like like there may be a chance of candida(thrush)? because thats what im dieting too, but it doesnt look like any of the pictures that ive seen. My best bet is geographic tongue? because if its not that, then i have no idea. But i will try to make an appointment with my dentist too.

thank s

It doesn't look like candida from your picture - I'm sure you can look up pictures of candida in the mouth on the internet.  Best bet is to see a good clinician.

This is the last post I'll make to this thread.  All the best.
