HERPES-->HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE

I recently was diagnosed with HSV, through IGG I/II and IGM I/II. I am currently in the process of getting type testing done. So first off I was tested in April 2011 and my test came back negative. I have been with the same guy since Jan 2011 and we have always used condoms. He was tested in April as well and everything came back negative. We stopped using condoms in July and had sex around 4 times unprotected. A month later I had itching and  4 pimples appear on the outside of my vagina. They were never blisters and they went away with prescription yeast medication in 2 days. I had a positive viral culture followed by the two blood tests. My boyfriend tested negative and I'm just not sure how this is possible. I have been tested every 4-6 months via blood test since I lost my virginity 5 years ago. I'M SO CONFUSED HELP!!!

I truly believe he is the one who gave it to me. I am just confused because I have given him frequent oral since Jan. and I didn't get any symptoms. And if he has it I figure that much exposure would for sure transmit. Also if I have had this he has performed frequent oral so I figure he would have gotten it orally somehow but his tests are negative (I have no clue what test and have never seen his results) I'm just sick of dealing with this.

lysine doesn't do much of anything for herpes so we don't recommend supplementing with it. the lysine arginine theory was disproven many years ago and in fact, new research even uses arginine to treat herpes!

The negative type specific test result might only means that this was a recent infection for you. Such blood test take up to 3-4 months to become positive.

As I said before, a positive culture is definitive - there's no doubt you have genital herpes. But if you're willing to spend some more mand and confirm it through blood test, wait 3-4 months after symptoms, and if possible stop any antiviral medication you might be taking.

Sound as though you have it and you got it from him. More testing will not change that. My first test 25 years ago was negative, but my symptoms continued. Then I later read that the test was only 80% reliable.
But what I really want to tell you is that this is not a bad as it probably seems. I have been married for 20 years and my husband doesn't have it. I gave birth (C-section,of course)  and raised to 2 healthy kids, and enjoy a healthy sex life.
Read up on L-lysine supplements, don't trust your doctors to know anything useful about it, and be honest with your potential partners.

Okay so when I initially had my culture they did a non type specific igg blood test. Since it was positive they said they would do further testing to determine the type (through blood antibody). I did this through the health department. I never got a call on the type specific test results so yesterday afternoon I decided to call.

IGG Type I-->negative
IGG Type 2-->negative

What does this mean?!!! I know it can miss 1 in 10 hsv infections so another test?

Okay thank you for the information. I will make sure I get a type specific igg blood test and go from there.

You're getting wrong information. Type specific antibody tests for herpes, IgG, are highly reliable. Yes, once you're infected, the IgG will always be positive, but such information cannot be taken into account as a factor against the test, really. Antibodies don't go back to 'negative' result if the virus is dormant. If you are infected, you'll always have a positive IgG test, that's the norm. Period.

Honestly, if you're boyfriend is immature, you cannot know for sure what testing has he pursued. Many people are sure they don't have herpes and end up getting the wrong tests. But if you guys broke up, it's time to stop thinking about his testing and thinking about your own situation.

You had a positive culture - you do have genital herpes. We are just trying to help you getting to know the type, since that's a very important information for those who have genital herpes. A type specific blood test 3-4 months after your symptoms will tell the story.

My boyfriend and I broke up. But he was tested and it was negative. he wont ask what kind of test, hes been very immature about the whole situation. I dont very well trust the antibody testing because Ive read igg stays in your blood for life and also that if dormant your antibodies will go back to normal so I dont know. But I am only concerned for myself at this time and just want a for sure test.

Dang okay...I just dont know how much I trust the antibody testing even type specific because Ive heard negative things about it. I just would like to know for sure so I can move on.

Ask for a type specific blood test, IgG only. Also, it's time for your boyfriend to show his results (or get his results), so you can both learn who has what and how to prevent transmission, if you decide so.

unfortunately absolutely none of the blood testing you've had done so far was the right testing :(

no need for a spinal tap to determine type. Unless the virus is active, no herpes will be detected in your csf anyways.

Test 1: viral culture--> virus found positive

Test 2: HSV IGG I/II-->12.5 high positive

Test 3: HSV IGG I/II--> 11.9 high positive
Test 3: HSV IGM I/II-->1.51. high positive

Test 4: HSV PCR DNA Type I--> negative
Test 4: HSV PCR DNA Type 2-->negative
Test 4: HSV IGG I/II--> 10.6 high positive

I don't feel my gyno is getting the correct tests done. I wanted to do the Western Blot Type Specific but they coulnd't order it they said. And I wanted to have a spinal tap done to determine the type because my gyno said it is dormant in my body.

I tested positive but he tested negative. I know that the IGM is not recommended which is why I was so confused that my gyno ordered it. I plan on getting the Western blot done because I have not had any other symptoms or OB since. I'm sure he will get the same test even though he came back negative.

odds are this is hsv1 genitally if you and your partner are both testing negative for herpes on igg blood tests. even the best blood tests we have still miss 1 out of every 10 hsv1 infections. getting your culture typed is the best way to get accurate answers as to type.

your provider is ordering herpes testing that is out dated and no longer recommended. Encourage them to read the 2010 cdc herpes guidelines to update their herpes testing knowledge. It'll help them best serve their patients as well as help protect them from malpractice suits!

No they did not type my culture. All my results said were virus found. I have not had any symptoms since but I also started supressive therapy a couple weeks ago with valtrex.

I have been bugging my boyfriends what type of test he had but I haven't gotten an answer because I know he didn't ask the doctor. I know he asked for the test I'm just not sure which test type he got. I'm sure it wasn't type specific.

I will post my results once I get them and see what tests he got...Thanks

First: was your culture typed? If not, make sure they do, if there's still time. That's very important to understand what's going on.

About your blood tests, post your results as soon as you have the type specific ones. Those are the ones that matter.

Has your boyfriend tested negative in a recent type specific blood test? Have you seen such results? I ask this because the usual std screening does not include herpes blood test. Besides, when did he get tested?

With such answers we'll be able to help you better I suppose.
