HPV 1

I just found out that I tested positive for HPV1.  I had oral sex and vaginal sex with my partner 17 days ago.  He has no symptoms.  Could he have not gotten HPV

The IgG looks for antibodies in the blood that are generated in the presence of HSV. At the moment, you have no antibodies to HSV-2. To be sure you never contracted it, however, you'll want to repeat the test for HSV-2 in about 16 weeks, which can be the amount of time it takes to trigger a positive result on a reliable blood test. Hope that helps.

By the way, your HSV-1 antibody count is very high. You've had it for years, probably since you were very young. You will NOT contract it again, anywhere on your body.

How were you diagnosed? I'm assuming a blood test was used.

HSV-1 sheds *without symptoms* about 12% of days, according to a recent study. Unfortunately, 12% is not 0%. It means there's HSV-1 on the surface of your skin 43-44 days of the year. The caveat is that HSV-1 doesn't shed as often genitally as it does orally. You're more likely to pass it with a kiss than with genital intercourse.

If he gave you oral sex and you have HSV-1 genitally, he certainly could acquire the virus if you were not using a barrier. You could also have given it to him if you gave him oral sex. This is how 1/3 of new genital HSV-1 cases occur.

There is also a slim chance he could have contracted it via intercourse if you were shedding and not using a condom at the time.

Next steps? First, monitor your symptoms, and have any new blisters swabbed as soon as they appear, to determine the site of your HSV infection. Unfortunately, a blood test cannot tell you where your HSV is.

Next, if you're going to be dating a non-H person, disclose your HSV status before sexual contact. Next, get on suppressive daily antiviral therapy, which will reduce the risk of transmission at least 50%. Then always use a barrier/condom with every sexual contact. Finally, abstain whenever you have symptoms.

By the way, he also needs to get tested. For all you know, he already has HSV-1. According to Dr. Anna Wald at the University of Washington, about 65% of Americans have HSV-1. If you both have had it for over 4 months, you can stop worrying about transmitting it to each other.

Good luck to you!

Most likey you contracted it at childhood. You can have a blood test now and if its high like 5 that also would confir its an old infection.

If your hsv1 is oral and you tested negative for hsv2 then pretty much the vaginal is not an issue. But keep in mind that if he contracts genital herpes from you giving him oral sex and he has sex with you, you could contact it in your genital area as well. Its not very common but does happen.

Since I did not test postive for HSV 2 there should not be an issue with gential herpes with vaginal sex we had

Yes the doctor is correct but if you did not have a lip sore at the time you gave oral sex lowers the risk as shedding occurs 9-18% of the time. Not high and now so low. You should use a condom for their protection.

It was blood test and it came back positive for hsv1 not hsv 2.  Doctor said it was the one that was related to cold sore in the mouth, but could be spread during oral sex
