HSV-1 - wife got from me

My wife and I had oral sex about 5 days ago and she got tested and has hsv-1 herpes.  I had a small cold sore (maybe get 1 a year)  This is where the doctor believes she got it.  To tell you the truth it kills me to know that I gave this to my wife.  I see a lot of info on HSV-2, but would like to know what our future looks like with HSV-1.  Will she have as many break outs as HSV-2?  Is this something that will cause her pain for the rest of her life?

You have hsv1 orally, you and your wife engage in oral sex so yes it's where it came from.

About 1/2 of folks who have hsv1 genitally never get another ob. Of those who do, the average is 1 additional ob the first year and 1 ob every other year after that.  Only a small percentage of folks have ob's frequently with hsv1 genitally.

Since you have hsv1 orally and your wife has hsv1 genitally, just avoiding sex anytime she has a recurrence is all the precautions you need to take. She can just treat each ob as it happens with the oral antivirals. Hopefully ob's will be few and far between too.
