HSV 1 Transmission

Hi there,

I have had oral HSV1 for a number of years now. I had had a recurrence around 2 weeks ago which had almost completely healed and had very brief oral sex with my partner. There was no contact with the sore at all, as it was to the side of my lip. I'm worried that I may have transmitted the virus to my partner. Can the virus be spread through just saliva, with no contact?

Also what is the normal time after transmission for an initial outbreak to occur?

It's less likely that you transmitted the infection to her if it was scabbed.

definitely you need to talk to her about this. Find out if she's ever had testing and if you've never been tested for hsv2, why not both of you go for testing to cover all your bases?  You can order up the testing yourselves through healthcheckusa.com or tstd.org or similar online testing centers if you have one near you. That way it's completely private and saves you the cost of an office visit too.

Yes you could have infected her! You need to let her know! It's so mean to not tell her! If she has it and doesn't know it then she could infect other people!! Has she had any symptoms? Has she told you that she's had problems?

I haven't asked as yet if she has been infected with the virus. I know she has come into contact with myself with a coldsore?

I know this sounds terribly irresponsible of me, but alcohol was involved. I stopped the contact after a few seconds as I had realised that I still may have been infectious.

What is the contagiousness of the virus at the latter stages of the scabbing? The sore had almost completely healed.

you don't need contact with the sore to transmit the virus. You shed the virus from the orolabial area too, not just the actual sore. You also shed periodically in between obvious cold sores too.  http://www.ashastd.org/herpes/herpes_learn_oralherpes.cfm  has terrific information on oral herpes for more reading. Hopefully you can access it, I know asha has been having issues with their site and are in the process of switching servers.

this was a potential risk to your partner. has your partner ever had a cold sore or have they been tested to know their herpes status?
