HSV 1 Transmission

by helpanswer, Oct 26, 2008 12:35PM
Hi,

I'm sorry if I am posting this on the wrong forum, but I'm sure someone will be able to help with my question.

My friend has a coldsore and although I avoided kissing him on the lips and sharing a drink from him, he gave me a quick kiss on the cheek. I have been tested for hsv1 and don't have it. What are the chances of someone passing on the virus from a kiss on the cheek? Ive read it has to come in contact with mucuous membranes, that is why the genitals and lips are more susceptible. On the other hand, I everyone says how it is extremely contagious and make it seem like if someone kisses you with a coldsore, you are definitely going to get it.

Can someone clarify?? Thank you

On the whole it is best not to kiss anyone with an active cold sore it is skin to skin contact that transmits the virus .... and you are correct it is usually the soft muscus membrane areas that are most likley to cause transmission.
I doubt it would have been passed from a kiss on the cheek unless you had a break in your skin at that area.
