HSV 1 genital... Can you still test positive for HSV 2?
Hello... I recently tested positive for HSV 1 genital after a pretty bad initial OB. I've never had any signs or symptoms of HSV 1 or 2 in my life! I am dating a man who has had cold sores in the past, and oral sex
has been normal for us. I'm still waiting on the results of my blood work to see if I have antibodies or if this is a recent infection. My question is: is it possible for HSV 1 to have lain dormant for years with no OB, and then to have a severe initial OB?
Also, would it be possible that I could still test positive for HSV 2 but have an HSV 1 OB?
Yes you can have both hsv1 and hsv2 genitally but the vast majority of folks don't.
At this point I recommend that you and your partner both get type specific herpes igg blood tests to know who has what. Make sure that hsv1 really is the only herpes going on in your relationship.
Since you have hsv1 genitally and your partner has hsv1 orally, this really won't be much of an issue for you two. Just avoid sex
anytime you have anything going on genitally but his own hsv1 infection gives him significant protection from contracting hsv1 on the genital area now.
This most likely was a newly acquired infection for you from the sounds of things.
Thank you for your response! My NP called with my test results this morning, and as I thought it's a recent infection as I tested neg for both types on the IGG.
I guess I'll have to wait & see which side of the 50% of people who don't get anymore outbreaks I'm on...
This sucks.... :(
