HSV 1 incubation period clarification

Hi,

In the initial exposure is the incubation period the time you get flu/sore throat /headache symptoms or the  time you get the sore/blister or lesions?

As I got sore throat symptoms 2 days after exposure and suspect cold sore 21 days after.

Regards

Also if it's an initial hsv-1 infection how do I tell if it's a cold sore herpes related or just a  skin issue as most look the same. Is there something which you can generally say ok it's a cold sore in INITIAL infection eg:

Do all cold sores Owzze a yellow substance?
Are cold sores on side of the lips not middle?
Do initial cold sores clear in what time frame?
They say the initial infection is your worse so do you get multiple and for longer?
Do cold sores turn bright red?
Is there normally a hole in the sore in the middle which is red?
How long after initial cold sore can you get it tested ? In 4-5 days too long?

Please advise as it's hard to know what's what.

Thats a bit out side the normal time frame. But bottom line is that a sore would show up before any flu type sympotms
