HSV 1

Hi, I need answers so that I will quit freaking out. I have been with my boyfriend (now ex) for 2 years. He told me to begin with that he gets cold sores and has been getting them since he was a kid. I made him go get a herpes blood test anyway which came back positive for hsv1. At this point I had never been tested for herpes. I didn't think it was a big deal and he said you can only catch the virus if you come in contact with an apparent cold sore. Anyway, 3 months or so ago, he went down on me and then the next day he felt tingling and said he felt a cold sore coming on. I FREAKED!!!! I did some research and saw that Hsv1 can be transmitted to the genitals. I started keeping watch to see if anything appeared on my private parts. Nothing ever appeared. Not on my genitals and not on my mouth. Everyone I told that has genitals herpes told me that if I didn't have an outbreak, I was probably fine. I then read that you can have herpes with no symptoms. So, About a month after the scare, I got back with my ex-husband. We kissed and he gave me oral sex. A week later he called and told me that he had broken out with a cold sore on his lip. He had never had a cold sore and was previously checked for the herpes virus. He came back negative. I didn't know what to think. I decided to go get a herpes test, and it came back positive for HSV1. My doctor said that since I've never had an outbreak that we didn't know where I had it. I have had tingling and slight redness on my upper lip but it never turned into anything? What do I do? What do I think? Do I have genital herpes? Could I have given my ex husband a cold sore on his mouth when he went down on me even though I didn't have an apparent sore? Can you spread HSV1 from your genitals to the mouth? Can you have hsv1 on the genitals and not the mouth? How do I know where I have it? Can I give oral sex and receive oral sex without worrying if I have no symptoms? What about asymptomatic shedding? I need answers so I know how to live my life. What I can and can not do. I AM TERRIFIED I will never be able to be with someone with out giving them herpes.Thank you.

I have a cold sore and recently used some of my saliva to lubricate my vagina while having sex unconsciously! Please help did I just infect myself with genital herpes? Or my partner?

Most adults have hsv1 orally. It's incredibly common. Odds are that your hsv1 infection is oral, not genital.  Most folks who have hsv1 orally, don't get obvious cold sores to know it.

http://www.ashastd.org/herpes/herpes_learn_oralherpes.cfm  has more info on hsv1 orally for more reading.
