HSV 1

I had a breakout of herpes in my mouth and the top of my penis toward my stomach.  When I went to the doctor to get tested I was diagnosed with HSV 1.  The test was performed on the sore in my genital area but the bulk of the herpes were in my mouth, on my tongue, and in my throat.  The more I read I am confused how the outbreak could occur in both areas.  I did not have oral sex with the person I contracted it from and at this point I really don't know if I have genital or oral HSV 1.  I have been bothered and stopped dating since the outbreak.  I have had cold sores in the past so I would assume I already had HSV 1 but I was wondering if there is a way to determine if I have genital herpes now or is there a possibility for oral herpes to have symptoms in my genital area?

Thanks for the questions

I told her about it but she said she never had it but would test.  She still has not gone though.  Neither of us performed oral.

I did have multiple ulcers in my mouth and on my tongue.  My throat and insides of my cheeks also had the sores.  My penis had just a couple small ulcers.

I am guessing what your saying is it is possible to contract HSV 1 both orally and genitally at the same time but just uncommon when you already had it in one place or the other?  So I am guessing there is no actual way to determine for sure if I have genital or oral.  Nobody seems to reply to my question that there is a way other than just trying to figure out through patterns.

My biggest concern first off is obviously giving this to someone else but I have had a vasectomy and I really would like to know if I am contagious in the genital area.  I just don't see myself enjoying a sex life with a partner when we have to always stop to put a condom on before starting.  I know that probably sounds bad but since I started doing this research, 70% of people have HSV 1 but I can't imagine all married couples and people in relationships use condoms every time the have sex.

Can you describe what the sore in your mouth looked like? Was it multiple ulcers?

If a swab was positive via PCR on lesions in your mouth and penis then you have HSV1 orally and genitally contracted at the same time. It may not necessarily have been from this encounter but a prior.

Has your recent encounter tested herself? If she is positive for HSV1 then it's quite possible you contracted it from her and that she may have it genitally as well. Did you perform oral on her during this encounter?

With the test I had a PCR on the Swab.  The result was HSV 1.  The sore they swabbed was on top of my penis.  Talking with the Doctor, it sounds like even she is unsure how I had HSV 1 sores on my penis and in my mouth.  The girl I was with did not perform oral sex on me so I am still confused how I could have sores there and in my mouth.

I did not have a blood test.  According to my doctor that will just tell me if I have HSV 1 or HSV 2 which we already know.  I guess there is no test to determine if a person has genital versus oral HSV 1?

As far as timing, I started to see the sore on my penis 2 days after we had sex and in my mouth 3 days after.

This looks a little confusing. I'm with Life though, you must clarify the exact results of all tests that you had. Look into the following:

Did you have a culture test or PCR on the swab? What was the result? If culture was the sample correctly typed after HSV was isolated?

What blood test did you have? What were the numerical results?

How long after the physical contact did the symptoms emerge?

that is correct. The swab test was taken from the sore on my penis.the doctor just said that I was hsv1 positive but did not clarify if it was genital or oral. The symptoms that I was showing seemed to fall in line more with oral herpes even though I had a sore down there.my biggest question is if there is a test I should take to identify if I have oral or genital or both.
