HSV-2 index value of 28.5 possible??

Hi, I'm new to all this. I was not sexaully active for 7 years and met this man. I foolishly had unprotected sex with him a few times. I just got a call from a nurse at my OB/GYN office saying that I'm positive for herpes I & II. The nurse could not really explain things to me, and I have a dr's appt on Monday. She told me that my HSV type 2's index value is 28.5. Is this possible??

have been educated from this site, i told the doctor about the 2010 cdc herpes testing recommendations against igm test, but she said that i was speaking about it out of context and that igm tells that i do have some type of infection which is nerve wrecking :(

the herpes igm test is a greatly flawed test. Since the release of the 2010 cdc herpes testing recommendations advises against it being drawn on adults, it's actually malpractice for your provider to still be drawing it on patients. they need to update their information so that they are doing their patients the most good as well as protecting themselves!

quest labs that is the number for the herpes WB. It's a send out for all quest labs so their local quest lab might have to dig a bit to figure out what to do with the order.  confirming results with the WB is also part of the 2010 cdc herpes guidelines.

hello grace. i've just been to my gyn doctor, and got a copy of my initial result.

this is what it reads: HSV I/II IgG 25.8 index, HSV, IgM I/II combination 1.03 ratio.

it also shows right below the igm ratio (negative 1.09) if positive is >1.09 why is my igm result positive when it is only 1.03 ratio? my doctor said that the fact it showed igm, that means i've been exposed/infected with something "recently". she said it may not neccessarily mean herpes I or II, but it could mean that i may be infected with something like mono which is also a herpes' family. she said to wait and have another test run in about 2 or 3 mos. i suggested western blot, but she said that was only for hiv. i mentioned your site, and told her that there is herpes western blot. i saw somewhere on this site you mentioned the herpes western blot testing number from quest...i think you said #34534? i gave this number to the nurse, but she said that there is no such thing. can you pls help?

thanks for your advice. i will wait until january to run these tests again. i think it was just a minor irritation in my genital area from shaving and somehow rubbing against my underwear wrong or something because it feels fine now. i spoke with this man and he swears he runs std tests on a regular basis, and he is clear...but i will definitely wait until january to run these tests again. and also i'd like to add that this site is God-sent. you're helping so many people by educating with proper information. thank you so very much. this experience has taught me that i need to be more respectful of myself and my body. no more premarital sex for me from now on!

you need to wait and repeat your blood testing 3 months after the last time you had sex with this partner in order for it to be accurate.

you needed to wait 6 weeks post encounter for syphilis testing and 3 months for hiv and hepatitis testing too.

you can have hsv1 genitally but it tends to present with very obvious symptoms that you wouldn't miss because you'd be in a lot of pain. No reason to pay too much more attention than usual to your genital area just because you tested + for hsv1.

shaving your pubic hair off leaves you vulnerable to infections. it's safer to just use a body hair trimmer and keep it all short. You still end up shaving in the crook of your leg so you don't have any unsightly hairs sticking out the side of your underwear but the skin there is less vulnerable to infection with std's.

the last sexual encounter with him was oct 7th, 2011. i've never had cold sores or any genital symptoms of herpes until this afternoon that my genital area was mildly itchy. now i don't know if it's from shaving (i shaved the area this morning). i looked in the mirror, but it all looked normal. no bumps, sores, redness...looked very normal.

even with hsv1, i can still have genital?? this is scary.

it means you have hsv1. if you can't recall ever having had cold sores or any genital symptoms of herpes, odds are your hsv1 is oral.

how long has it been since you last had sex?

grace, i just got the result back from quest. it reads as follows: hsv-1 ab igg 4.27 positive, hsv-2 ab igg <.90 negative. does this mean i have oral, not genital?

labcorp's default herpes testing isn't all that terrific and unfortunately many clinics don't understand and just routinely order it :(

Your 28.5 igg is a combined igg test result. it's pretty much a waste of time to do the combined because once you hit your 20's, most folks will test + for it because of the high rates of hsv1 infection. It has a high false positive rate too and pretty much all the combined igg tells you is that you probably have herpes - it says nothing else.  the "highness" of the combined result is meaningless. no worries that you have a 28.5 - you aren't extra infected or anything :)

the default labcorp test first does the combined igg. if that is positive then it just does a type specific hsv2 igg ( the assumption being that most folks have hsv1 so why bother testing for it - a very flawed assumption with the test but one more reason not to order the default testing ).   The 1.03 result is most likely your hsv2 igg.   hard to tell since you aren't entirely sure of what your test results are.

quest labs do do the type specific testing and they do the herpeselect. some labs do the elisa version of it and some do the immunoblot.  if you had the elisa, you'll get exact numeric results to post here for me to look at - e.g. hsv1 igg 5.89 and hsv2 igg 1.04 or whatever they are. if it's the immunoblot, you'll just get a + or a -. once you have your new test results, I can better help you :)

please do not attempt to interpret test results for folks!!!  You have no experience and are just reading and repeating or guessing. it really is a bit more complicated than that!

thank you!

i think the test being done at quest is a type specific test. tstd told me that they use herpeselect and their sample test on their website listed the test as type-1 & type-2.

Of course i had no idea what info to ask for when the nurse called so my info is sort of everywhere. sorry. I couldn't get a hold of the nurse after that day so i'm just waiting to go in to see the doctor. She mentioned the following things, type 1, type 2, igg, igm, 28.5, 1.03, a combined test, past infection, recent infection...hope this helps. btw, the blood sample was sent to labcorp. in the meantime, i had another test done 2 days ago at quest through tstd.

She said this was a combined result. I don't remember if she said igg or igm...but she gave me two readings. once was 28.5 & the other one was 1.03. I told here that 28.5 seemed high and she said that is what it said.

are you sure that is a hsv2 igg or a combined igg result?
