HSV 2 transmission

by DoctorFriend, Sep 10, 2009 11:41AM
I have a married female patient with a primary genital HSV type 1 and type 2 infection.  Her husband denies any history of lesions.  How likely is it that he could have asymptomatic viral shedding that just now caused an infection in her?  They have been married 15 years, and he denies infedility.

You should do bloodwork on the husband. Herpes Select or something. I bet he has at least HSV-1

I'm not sure how you determined that it's a primary infection with hsv1 and hsv2 both. Odds are it isn't.

what testing have you done on her?

What testing has her partner had done?

http://www.ashastdwebstore.org/herpes-testing-toolkit.html is a cheap and awesome publication you can publish to help you better understand herpes testing for your patients if you feel you could use a little extra education on it. Asha has other really awesome booklets too. Also if you contact your GSK valtrex rep, they can give you some terrific packets for the medical providers in your clinic as well as wonderful packets to hand out to patients who are newly diagnosed too.
