HSV Blood test results

I'm not able to interpret these results and really would like some help.

I had the Herpes Simplex AB Type 1 & 2 IgG IgM Antibodies tests done.

Here are the results:

HSV 1 & 2 IgG Type Specific Antibodies
HSV 1 Type Specific AB     0.15
HSV 2 Type Specific AB     0.04

Herpes Simplex Virus IgM AB W/Reflex to titer:
HSV IgM Ab Screen        Detected Index: Reference Range: Not Detected

I read that the titer is only tested if antibodies are found.  I only want to know if I have the virus or not.  I do not know what the difference is between IgM and IgG and which one tells me what??? This has caused  emotional turmoil and I am still so confused.

Please help.  I'm having a lot of trouble getting clear answers on this.

http://www.medhelp.org/posts/STDs/Confusiion-over-other-IgM-Herpes-posts/show/248394  is a prior post by HHH that goes over in detail why the igm test is a poor test for herpes and why it shouldn't be done.

Your igg results are negative for herpes. What led you to get tested? How long after you had last had sex with anyone did you have your blood work drawn?

Answering your question, I permormed the test because I had a one night stand with another man on April 1, 2009. Around five days after sex I had a burning sensation and irritation on my anal area. Also I had burning sensation at the tip of my penis.

On April 13, 2009 I saw my doctor and she think that I have Genital Herpes.

The second question I didn't understand.

The answer to the second question is 5 days later. You said you had sex on April 1. Then 5 days later you went for testing.

Unless you had active obvious lesions that the doc can culture, a visual exam of "irritation in (my) anal area" shouldn't be used to diagnose genital herpes.

Did your partner have genital herpes? Why are you concerned about herpes? Do you even know your herpes status at this point from prior sexual relationships?

A burning peen and irritation in your anal area doesn't sound like herpes.

Sorry you did have testing. But when? 2 years ago? 2 weeks ago? 2 months ago?

I agree with waring - this doesn't sound like herpes to me either.  Did you ever get any obvious lesions or just the burning sensation?

It was too early to test with the blood test. You can repeat it in august ( just the igg ) and see what it is then. Should you get any obvious lesions before then, return to your provider promptly. If you just have continued burning sensations, follow up on them now because herpes isn't likely the cause.

When I went to de doctor she said that she saw a obvious lesion, but the doctor never culture. She also put me on Valtrex. But for me it was feel burning sensation and also very painful.

I call my partner and he told me tha he doesn't have herpes or any other STD, he also told me tha he had medical exams.

This is the first time that something like that happend to me and I'm very nervous. This is my first test for herpes, I also tested for HIV, Gonorrea, sifilis, Hepattitis, and Clamydia (chlamydia) and all test were negative.

Righ now I don't feel any symptom, I read yor sugestion for IgM test and a feel a little confortable. I'm going to repeat my IgG test on June. Did you think is better if I wait until Agust o June its ok?

I repeat the test on November 14, 2009

Here are the results:

HSV 1 & 2 IgG Type Specific Antibodies
HSV 1 Type Specific AB     0.78
HSV 2 Type Specific AB     0.06

EIA Value
1.10 Positive

If tha mean that Í'm not have herpes?

Your tests indicate you are negative for HSV1 and HSV2.

I agree with petal, it's not likely that herpes was causing your symptoms.

glad you followed up on this and got the answers you needed :)

I know that you told me that the final resultas are negative to HSV1 and HSV2, Thank God!!!

But I would like to understand a little bit more about this virus.

The question is; why the results of HSV1 are so different between the first test and the second.
