HSV-2 Antibodies NOT Present: This means with 95-98% accuracy you do not have genital herpes unless you acquired it very recently. New studies have shown that by 6 weeks after HSV-2 infection, 60-75% of patients will be positive by the HerpeSelect® test but for a few patients (about one in 5), it can take as long as 6 months to develop antibodies. Once antibodies are made, the test stays positive. If you might have acquired herpes very recently, you may need to repeat the antibody test in 6-8 weeks.
I'm sure Grace will have a better answer,
but think of Herpes testing and time as a bell curve. Some people will build enough antibodies to test positive in 2 weeks... others greater than 4 months, but the majority of us if we have HSV will test positive in the 12 to 16 week range.
I tested negative for HSV 1 and 2 at 7 weeks, but I'm still waiting it out until I hit the 12 week point to know what my real results are.
If you were negative at 20 weeks you should be ok, I believe a herpeselect test is around 97% accurate. People do take longer than 4 months to create anti-bodies to a detectabel level, but I understand it's pretty rare.
Sorry to bother you again I retested in late october 20 weeks after for both hsv1&2 and both iggs came back negative do you thing its safe to think i dont have the virus. I read some times it takes up to 8 months for an accurate test is this true?
Oral herpes is transmitted thru direct contact with your oral area. It's not something a child will get from sharing a bed with their parents. Don't even "clean" a pacifier off in your own mouth, don't prechew food in your own mouth for baby and when you are sick or have obvious oral symptoms, don't kiss them on the lips, nose or eye area. Not 100% perfect precautions but they do go pretty darn far.
You tested 2 months post symptoms which is a little early. It's up to you if you feel that it's worth retesting again anytime after october.

I had the rash on my left rib side by the ribs and stomach. I am concerned abouth the hsv1 because i have a little baby and dont want him to get it from me. Can he get it from sleeping in the same bed with me? Do you think I should re test?
http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/248394 is a prior post that explains in detail why the herpes igm test is not recommended to be used. disregard your results.
How did they diagnose you as having shingles? where was your rash at with it?
Even the best blood tests we have still miss 1 out of every 10 hsv1 infections. If your lip symptoms reoccur, see your provider within 48 hours of their appearance for a lesion culture to confirm hsv1.
