HSV Transmission

Hello, I am new to the forum. I am a healthcare worker that works with a large population of patients that carry STDs, especially herpes. I recently went to an emergent delivery where a baby was born without a heart rate. In my haste to act, I neglected to put on both of my gloves (I only had one on) and subsequently touched to newborn. Afterwards, I discovered that the mother was taking Valtrex for genital herpes. The baby as delivered vaginally. I am concerned that I may have contracted herpes during this entire process. As soon as the baby was stabilized I immediately washed my hands thoroughly, and made certain I did not touch any mucous membranes. I was told the mother did not have any active lesions. How likely is it that I may have contracted HSV from this incident? I did have a very small cut on my hand, but it was not actively bleeding/seeping. I was also concerned about the possibility of herpetic whitlow. I never came into direct contact with the mother, but obviously I am concerned about the transmission of her vaginal fluids onto the baby. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

There is no chance that you got herpes.  You should check out the herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com for more info.  Since you are working with those with stds, you should learn all you can.  You should also check out www.ashastd.org
