HSV igG wrong?

HSV igG wrong?

Out of paranoia, I had a blood test done two years ago, for HSV types 1 and 2.  I knew I was positive for type one because I use to get cold sores as a child.  My IgM came back negative, but my IgG came back positive, though I have never had an outbreak, not before the test or after.

I thought for sure when I was admitted to the hospital for Bacterial Meningitis (I went into septic shock) that I would exhibit an outbreak, but I didn't.  Is it possible that the test was wrong?  Also, after finding out this result, I contacted my boyfriend at that time, and the two previous, all were negative.

IGM is a worthless test and shouldn't be used for HSV testing.  Your IgG is the one to trust.  Your question doesn't make clear what testing you are talking about.  Was your testing a type specific or the combo?  The way to tell is did you get one result for HSV-1 and another result for HSV-2 or Did you get one result that included HSV-1 and HSV-2?  If you had a combo test you would test positive because you have HSV-1.  You need a type specific igg test to be done at that point.

To be honest, I'm not sure, it's been two years since I've seen the results.  I was working in the ER at the time, so I had access to the system.  I remember IgM coming back first as negative, I had to wait longer for IgG, and the results for that portion came back H for both types at the same time.

It just seems strange to me, I remember reading that if you have type 1, it lessens your chances for contracting type 2.  I've never had an outbreak, and no one I had been with was positive, at least, they told me they weren't, I'm just going off their word.  I didn't know if maybe I was just extremely asymptomatic due to having cold sores as a child and thus building up a higher resistance to the actual outbreak, or if maybe something was wrong with the test.  Of course, I was praying for the latter.

hsv1 doesn't provide any significant protection against contracting hsv2.

if you call and get the actual test results , I can better help you - e.g. hsv1 igg 4.9 and hsv2 igg 1.8 or whatever they are is what I need to see.
