HSV type 2 on my hand??!

About 2 weeks ago I had a small patch of very painful blisters pop up on the back of my hand, they worsened with time. I went to the doctors and he took a sample of the fluid in the blisters, I go in for results today and am told they are HSV type 2. He called it coldsores...Internet calls it genital herpes. It's recurrent with the first outbreak just clearing up and another showing up, ON MY HAND. How did I get genital herpes on my hand?? I have a 2 year old and a boyfriend, I don't want them to become infected.

You had a lesion culture that was hsv2+, you don't really need a blood test at this point to confirm your status.

Herpes on the hands is not very common any more but it happens. At this point I recommend that your partner get tested to know his status. typically when you have hsv2 on the hands, you either got it from a partners genitals or from your own.

Since you are having a 2nd flare up, call your provider for more antivirals if you don't already have them. Since this is a recent infection, you probably should do a full week of either acyclovir or valtrex again. Keep the rash covered so your son is protected from contracting this. A simple bandage is fine.

Keep asking questions!!

I also have an HSV-2 Infection on my hand, herpetic whitlow of my middle finger. Dave here was kind enough to answer my questions, however, I wish to hear from you as well Grace!

According to Dave, you can't necessarily transmit HSV-2 without active blisters/lesions.

Please shine some light on this, Grace.

Hi, im of the opinion that you should have a hsv type specific blood test to confirm this is infact hsv2. It is possible to contract it on the hand but its more for hsv1 and is more those in the dental profession. Do keep it wrapped and away from others till confirmed as is very contagious when sores are present. Hsv is not limited to one body part but can be on the hand, face and genital area.
