HSV without Recurrence in Pregnancy. Does this warrant Suppressive TX?

I have googled and read a great number of medical reports on Herpes in Pregnancy, but most of these are all about NEW cases during pregnancy or recurrent cases of HSV-2. I however acquired HSV-1 Genitally from oral sex with past partner. I realize that this is still genital herpes, but I had my initial outbreak in July of '05 (at that time was cultured and they found it was HSV-1 that caused the infection) with no symptoms or recurrences in the past 3 years. I just recently became pregnant for the first time ever and in my 6th week (exactly 3 years after my initial outbreak) I had what I think was my first recurrence. It was not on my genitals however, it was in and around my anus. It was a pretty significant outbreak but I didn't have a culture done to check if this was HSV-1 as well. I assume it is. My dilemma now is that I am really hoping for a natural birth, but my midwife wants me to take suppressive therapy starting at 36 weeks to make sure I don't have an outbreak at the time of delivery. I have read that these drugs have not been well researched in pregnancy but seem to be safe. For me, that's not good enough. I feel like I'm not willing to risk my child's health and safety to take these drugs to prevent something that more than likely will not occur anyway. Am I wrong to assume that I will probably not have any more recurrences in the next 6 months since I've not yet had a recurrence in the genitals and this is a confirmed (by a culture of active lesion) HSV-1 infection? Sorry to ramble, but there is just no good information online about a situation like this with few to no recurrences and suppressive therapy. I appreciate any info that you can give me to help make this very difficult decision.

You do not have to take suppressive therapy during pregnancy unless you want to. It just helps to reduce the chances of having an active lesion at the time of delivery so that you can deliver vaginally.  If you don't want to take them then discuss that with your midwife and let her know how you feel.
