HSV1, A little confused.

For as long as I can remember I get cold sores on my lips every once in a while, usually when I am stressed or dont get enough sleep. I have been under a HUGE amount of stress lately and have had an outbreak on my mouth for about 3 weeks now...the first sore was fairly large, I went and bought  Abreva and it healed fairly quickly and the other sores were practically non-exsistent (just a tingling sensation and a little red bump then went away) Most members of my Family get cold sores, mom, grandma, uncles, aunts etc....so I understand that it is common and occurs in most people. Anyway, My question is....If I have an oral outbreak of HSV1  can I spread the HSV1 from my mouth to my genitals by touching my mouth then my penis?....Sorry if this question sounds dumb, I was just wondering.

Most doc's are just fine with you saying you get cold sores and want medication for them.  You can get the acyclovir 200mg, 30 tablets for $4 at walmart. Ask your doc to write the prescription like that for you to get it cheapest and then just take 4 pills at a time ( 800mg is what it totals ) 3x/day for 2 days at the very first sign of a cold sore about to start. Sometimes you can totally head them off like that.

Aveeno cold sore ointment with propolis in it is cheaper than abreeva .  You can use that as a topical at the same time too.

yes you should talk about your hsv1 oral infection at some point with a partner. You can transmit hsv1 to the genital area thru oral sex, even if an obvious cold sore isn't present. Talk about it so that together you can discuss what precautions to take together.

Thanks for Anwsering my question.. and Yes, Abreeva is really expensive and sometimes makes the Sores worse....or at least I think it does...At any rate, the next time I go to the doctor I will ask about the acyclovir...Quick Question....would they have to do a Blood test to confirm the HSV before they gave me a prescription or could I just explain that I have cold sores and want something to make them go away faster? And also, should I inform my partner of my HSV1 and should I avoid oral sex completely or just when I am having or think I'm about to have an outbreak.

it's not likely that you'd transmit your own hsv1 oral infection to the genital area just by touching. Not really something to worry about but anytime you touch your cold sore, try to remember to wash your hands.

You ever talk to your doctor about herpes antivirals for your cold sores to help them heal quicker? You can do a round of acyclovir for $4 at walmart - WAY cheaper than that teeny tube of abreeva that only heals cold sores half a day sooner than using nothing at all.
