HSV2 Too?
Hello,
Here is my situation: About 18 months ago I contracted GHSV1 from oral sex. I had never had an hsv infection, and had a pronounced primary outbreak. I had a few subsequent outbreaks, and after a year, pretty much nothing. I wasn't sure what type I had, and had 5 blood tests, but never showed a positive result. About 9 months into it I had a WB done, which confirmed HSV1 I never had swabs due to my schedule. I also managed to self inoculate to my right hand right after I was infected (recurred a couple of times then nada)
3 weeks ago, I had unprotected oral, and brief protected vaginal sex with a SW. 6 days later I had a few small spots show up on my glans, and the crawling skin feeling up and down my legs, similar, but a little different than the first infection. Then, a couple small blisters on my thighs, and possible 1 on my buttocks. I think that I managed to transfer it to my right hand, as I had a couple of small blisters pop up on my right hand.
My questions: is it possible that something I picked up from her would be reactivating my previous infection, or is it more likely that this is a new type?
Since I had to take a WB to finally get a diagnosis would a second infection take even longer to show up on a blood test?
How does having two types infect the same place affect shedding rates?

Yes, please get the blisters swab tested hopefully using PCR not culture, the next time they come up. Also ask that the PCR or culture, if that's all that they have available, be typed. Let me know the results, OK?

I am sorry to hear about your situation. My advice is to try and find a local support group. I did and I found them to be very helpful; it is great to be able to talk to people in the same boat. And once you do, you begin tor realize how common it really is. Most people have one type or another, but they just don't know it. And it sounds like he may not have even known.
Also, if you do find a group you can meet people within who are also looking to date, and understand your situation. It took me awhile to come to terms with my first infection; but I got over it and realized that it wasn't that bad. Unfortunately, I may have gotten another, which sucks, but if I have then I have to say it hasn't really affected my overall life much either. I have told a few people about it, and I was surprised how understanding they were.
Your life isn't over, remember, something like 80-90% of the human race has at least one herpes virus or multiple ones. And the world hasn't come off it's axis, now has it?

I went several times to the same doctor, who initially thought that it was folliculitis, but eventually conceded that since they kept coming back and seemed to be responding to the medication, that the pubic lesions seemed to be hsv. I still thought they were hsv2 at the time, but the WB only showed up hsv1. There were no other potential sources during that time.
I'm wiling to entertain the idea the the blisters on my hands are something else, but what else causes recurrent, watery blisters? They typically don't hurt so I will admit that it could be something else, but I just can't figure out what else fits the bill.

I would strongly suggest that if you get these hand blisters again that you have them swab tested for herpes.

Thank you for your response. I am pretty sure that the blisters aren't normal blisters; they would come even when I had not been working with my hands, and I noticed that the ones that I got else where tended to show up more when I ate arginine rich foods. I changed my diet, and have been taking lyesine and trying to avoid stress. I should also note that I was given 400 mg acyclovir to take when I had any issues. I also took one shortly after my questionable encounter a few weeks ago.
I haven't had them swabbed either, largely due to scheduling conflicts. I think they may be herpetic because I got the same lingering tingling sensations that I got else where. The blisters themselves are small and rarely hurt, which I guess is uncommon for whitlow. I am not overly concerned about them, I just find it more than a little strange that they should pop up again at the same time that I have had issues downstairs. I do tend to have hang nails and cuticle tears alot from work.
The blisters in my boxer area are usually quite small, and never formed the classic cluster formations, but they did recur more frequently when I ate high arginine food and was not well or stressed. I know that it isn't recommended, but tend to dab a little hydrogen perxoide on them, which they reacted to, and then put on a little neosporin and sometimes a band aid, and they would heal pretty quickly.

I am now just concerned that I may have gotten something that is an issue.
I have been waiting to have the full round of testing done (its about time for my yearly round anyway) just to give any bacterial culprits time to show up on a test. Do you think that if I had gotten something besides another hsv infection that my immune system might be tied up fighting it, and that might be leading to the latest outbreak?
I guess I will just have to test again and see what turns up.

There is a difference between a blister and a pimple, are you sure a water blister?
Yes, you could conceivably have acquired a new HSV 2 infection but not likely statistically. Yes, a second infection would take longer to show up in an antibody test. But the normal tests are more sensitive for HSV 2 than HSV 1 which is good. If you did have both, you would shed slightly more, yes.
