HSV2 positive

I know the same questions get asked again and again but here goes...I electively had a whole battery of tests done as part of my annual exam, including Herpes 1&2. This testing was  done at the lab in the hospital. i dont know which test.  These are my results. I had no idea there could have been prior exposure. Perhaps i did have an irritation one time on the labia majora but thought its was just irritation.  I also had itching on my shoulders several months ago and thought I had the flu in the fall.  With a high value like 9.04, its this current infection or evidence of prior infection. I really dont understand. are there any indicators to distinguish how long this exposure could have been. oh help!  i feel so unclean!

You have a lot going on in your body right now - could be any number of things making you feel so tired.  You can try switching to acyclovir if you want to see if it was the valtrex or not but typically any side effect you have with one herpes med, you'll have with the others but not always.

After reading how inaccurate the test is on here, i wondered why it was ordered by my Dr. and also wondered if it were significant when known positive HSV2, just not as an indicator initially. Thanks for the link.

Have you heard of anyone w/ extreme fatigue related to Valtrex? Other side effects?

RE: Hep C....I did receive good news!  Yay!  Check out my post on the Hep C board.  Snoopy Dancing in fully swing! WooHoo!

Thank you again Grace!  :D

the herpes igm test is a relatively useless test and we never, ever recommend that it be used. It is falsely + at least 1/3 of the time so you can' tassume anything by it being + either.  http://www.medhelp.org/posts/STDs/Confusiion-over-other-IgM-Herpes-posts/show/248394  is a terrific prior post by HHH that explains why it's a poor test in more detail.

Hello again! What a month this has been! I have had other blood work done and now have results. Please tell me what you think.

HSV IGM Index  1.84
HSV IGM AB   Positive

IGM viral index interpretive ranges:
1.09 positive

My Dr said these results point to a "relatively new exposure " (possibly 3 to 6 mos?). I am on Valtrex but am going to transition to acyclovir because of cost. Has anyone had extreme fatigue while on this medication?

I will post other results on the Hep C forum. Ugh!

Yep - that's why I"m a firm follower of the ron white ( blue collar comedy tour dude ) theory of when life gives you lemons, find a friend who has vodka :D   Of course since we are being careful with your liver right now, perhap find a baker who makes a darn good lemon meringue pie? he he he  Or lemon sponge pie.....dang I"m too hungry this morning to talk dirty like this!!!

Hang in there and keep following up with the gi doc for your hep c.

I just had more blood work drawn today for both things.

Thank you for your patience and the good information.  I am still stunned...But it is what it is!!!  What is that Law? Its only 10% situational and 90% how you deal with it!

Actually I rarely suggest infectious disease doc's to be honest.  most folks I know who are hiv negative, don't have positive experiences from it.  Your regular doctor or your gyn can handle your herpes - basically it's just giving you prescriptions with refills how you want them each year :)  You know you have it so now it's up to you to decide if you want to treat it and how to do so. Doesn't take specialized learning to write a prescription for it  ;)

It's up to you if you want to treat this and how. If your regular partner is als hsv2+, you don't have to do anything.  Your ob's evidently aren't very particularly bothersome and if transmission isn't an issue, no problems. If your partner tests hsv2 -, if you did nothing but avoid sex during any symptoms genitally, his risk on average is 4%/year.  You take daily suppressivetherapy and it's cut in half. Throw in condoms too and his risk is 1%/year on average.  Talk about it with him once you know his status and go from there.

I am at day 5 post diagnosis and doing somewhat better mentally thanks to xanax to help me sleep! I spoke w/ my GYN yesterday and he suggested I see an infectious disease doctor regarding the HSV2. Has anyone else seen an ID specialist or are you just treated by your general practitioner? Also wondering about suppression treatment. When did you start it initially and why? Are you on daily tx or just episodically.  How is the decision reached to do either tx or none? Is there further blood work that needs to be done regarding the HSV2? obviously I have had prior exposure w/ the HSV2 IgG AB being 9.04.

I have scheduled an appt with a GI/hepatologist yesterday re: the Hep C.  My liver enzymes were all normal on the CMP done last week. Hopefully I have no liver damage from this. I suppose i will be having more blood work done.

I have racked my brain, trying to isolate how and when i could have contrated either of these apparent blood born diseases.  As stated previously, my 1st husband was Hep C pos (we were divorced in 1991). As far as HSV2 goes...I am still at a loss as to who, what, when or where.  Now that i dig deep into the cobwebs of my 49 year old brain, i realize i have had a sore place at the base of my spine infrequently, usually associated with menstrual cycles. I thought it was a small recurring pilonidal-type cyst, as my sister has had surgery for this, my father was prone to cysts on the back, and i do sit at a computer all day long, sometimes aggravating my tailbone. I recently had a bout of what I thought was sciatic pain down the left leg which i attributed to sitting. It was definitely nerve pain and lasted for at least a couple of months! During this time is also when i did have a sore place "down there" but thought it was from having too much fun. Ha!  Perhaps both of these incidences could have been related to HSV2 outbreak? If so, is this why the antibody would be that high on recent testing; because there had been a recent OB and my body is fighting it? If so..then the levels rise and fall according to where you are in your outbreak cycle?

Any advice is appreciated.  I cant thank you all enough for being here and helping me realize that i am not alone!  1 in 4 women have HSV2 and 90% are undiagnosed.  Well...Now I am in the to 10% category and sit here with "eyes wide open!"

Thanks!

Yes you really could've had this for 15 years or 2 years or 9 months - there's absolutely no way to tell from the blood test. It's not worthwhile trying to figure out when you got it or from whom because you probably will never figure it out.  What's more beneficial is just accepting your status, knowing your current partners status and then the two of you deciding what precautions to take from here on out.

Hang in there - you've gotten a double whammy this week when you found out you had hep c and hsv2 :(  It's a lot for anyone to deal with.

Thanks for the info.  Ive been inconsolable for the past couple of days and the fear of not knowing the time of its onset is very unsettling.  Its been a tough couple of yrs for me following a huge heartbreak and yes...more than one reckless intimate encounter over this time.

I made that humbling phone call last pm to my lover and confidant (although we are not a full time thing and i have not seen him in over a month). I asked if he has ever been tested and he said no. He also says that he has not had any symptoms. I urged him to consider getting tested, sobbing all the while. He is very level headed and really tried to calm me, despite the prospect that he may also have been exposed to this, either by me or someone else.  I explained to him that Im not saying I gave it to him or that he gave it to me, as either way is a possibility.I care about him very much and so i had no choice but to make him aware, as well as making an attempt to reach out for some kind of support from him. My only hope is that he is negative and that it has not destroyed our relationship.

It is possible I may have had this for who knows how long, as long as 2 yrs or possibly longer? Prior to that i was in a 10 yr marriage w/ no infidelity. Could i have had this going back as far as 15 yrs and never known? I tend to believe my exposure was some time last fall, probably around late September to mid October when I did have flu-type sxs and experienced terrible iching on my shoulders. I thought i was reacting to sulfites in red wine. There was an incidence of intimate indiscretion at that time and I believe this would have been the time of potential exposure.  Should I contact said person?  We have no communication now, as that was merely a "flash in the pan" so to speak.  This has been a terribly humbling experience and I am stunned.

PS - The other bad news I received is that apparently i tested positive for Hepatitis C! My 1st husband was positive back in 1988.

Advice, prayers and well wishes are welcomed.  Thank you!

There's no way to tell from a blood test how long you've been infected.  All you can tell is + or -.

No reason to feel unclean because of herpes! It's incredibly common - just not something folks tend to talk about. Most folks are like yourself - infected and don't even know it until tested. If you haven't already, be sure to read the herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com and watch the patient counseling video there  Bothare free resources!

Do you have  a regular partner? Have they been tested?
