Help deciphering Herpes test results

by PlanetPluto, Mar 04, 2009 08:02PM
I recently had a full spectrum STI test, and came back positive for Herpes 1, but not Herpes 2.

A couple of questions:

For the HSV-1 test, it is listed as "HSV-1 aB IgG"  with a result listed as "Out of Range: 1.43H"  giving me "POSITIVE"

For the HSV-2 test, it is listed as "HSV-2 aB IgG" with a result listed as "In Range:  <0.90" giving me "NEGATIVE"

The testing was done through a LabCorp site, using the tSTD company (who seem very professional, btw).

Can somebody help me interpret the results?
Obviously, I have the one, and not the other - but I don't know what the numbers mean, and I have heard a lot about HSV-1 hiding HSV-2, and false positives/negatives.
I have done some research on this site and others on the web, and the fact that my two numbers are so close to each other is frightening me a little.  Should I get another test?

And I was last tested (I don't know the exact results, I just got a "negative" through Planned Parenthood) about a year ago, and have only been with two women since then.   Should I make sure I go and tell them my results?  We were safe, but oral transmission would be possible.  (although I have never experienced any cold sores that I have noticed)

Sorry for all the questions - thank you very much for your help and for this site!

You are + for hsv1 as most adults are. Since you can't recall any obvious genital symptoms, your hsv1 is most likely oral. Most adults who have hsv1 orally don't get obvious cold sores to know it.

Your hsv2 is negative.
