Help in explaining test results

by Freeeagle, Feb 05, 2009 06:57PM
I "tested positive for HSV I & II" almost 2 years ago. I re-took tests 2 other times & well, they were both positive. But I am confused as to the results & the type of tests. Can anybody help? These are how the tests read:

First Test - 21 Apr 07
==================
Herpes (Simplex Virus) IgG) - 219.80 Au/ml [Range 0.00 - 20.00] Previous or Current HSV Infection

Second Test - 26 Apr 07
==================
TEST                         RESULT
HSV I (IGM):               POSITIVE
HSV I (IGG):               WEAKLY POSITIVE

HSV II (IGM):               POSITIVE
HSV II (IGG):               WEAKLY POSITIVE

Third Test - 02 Jun 07
===============
TEST REQUESTED     RESULT          INTERPRETATION
Herpes Type 1 (IgG)     PIV = 2.30       SEROPOSITVE
Herpes Type 2 (IgG)     PIV = 1.95       SEROPOSITVE

PIV           INTERPRETATION OF PREDICTED INDEX VALUE
1.00         SEROPOSITIVE
                  1.00-1.84 LOW-POSITIVE
                  1.85-3.34 MID-POSITIVE
                  >3.35       HIGH-POSITIVE

So, what kind of these are these, and how acurate are they? I read on the forum that less than 2 is a false positive for one type of test so I am confused abput Test #3. Then I have NO idea what the first was about. And the second the lab told me what the ELISA thing, but there are no values. What does "Weak Positive" really mean?

But since three tests all said "positive" does that mean I really have both Herpes. I also took a 4th test. Will let you know how that goes.

At this point confirming your hsv2 status with a hsv2 biokit test or a herpes WB would be the best course of action.

well since you did have a low positive test for hsv 1 it could make a low false positive for hsv 2 but have a bio kit to confim/western blot. i probally wouldnt have taken it a 3/4 th time if you alrady tested positive twice unless your using a different serology tests like a immunoblot instead of an alissa but more than likely its going to come back positive. do you know your levels for the first test?(if aprox. the same score it may just be your viral load is over the 1.0 the cdc determined (but somewhat rare(no ones is never at zero)(i found a guy who tested positive 5 times but took a western blot and he was negative(several simular cases)

I only know the values for tests #1 & 3.

But i got the results for test #4 and my results (by ELISA) are:
HSV 1 - 1.6
HSV 2- 1.4

The values went DOWN. Could it be that i'm infected with neither? I'm looking for hope.  i don't live in the USA so the WB seems kinda out of my reach.

Btw, what is the approxiamate cost in the US to do the WB?

It's about $150 depending on where you get it done at.

Your hsv2 results are still all in the low positive range.  If you aren't in the US, seek out a support group for herpes in your area and ask what confirmatory testing options you have available to you.
