Herpatic Whitlow

My husband was recently diagnosed with Herpatic Whitlow on his big toe.  How did he contract this virus and how can it effect me?  He had a large cut on his foot from the lake the week prior, but cleaned it daily.  Neither of us has either type of herpes to our knowledge.  What precautions should we take?  He's keeping it wrapped now that it looks like the blisters are forming, but is there anything else?

There is a lot of information on contracting Herpatic Whitlow on the fingers, but not the toes...any information is greatly appreciated!

Ok so seriously - how was he diagnosed as having whitlow on his toe? Did they swab it for herpes and if so is it hsv1 or hsv2?

That's our question too!  :)  It hasn't been tested, just diagnosed by an Orthopedic.  That's why we are so confused!

aaaaahhhhh - just a visual diagnosis of whitlow doesn't cut it. Unfortunately if this has been going on for over a week now it's too late to get an accurate lesion culture too.    Seeing as how he had a cut in this same area it's not likely to be whitlow. I really think he's been misdiagnosed though really if you two have been into some kinky toe sucking stuff or toe ah um something else - do tell :)

I suggest seeing his regular doctor about it.  It's probably a bacterial infection and not herpes whitlow.
