Herpes Symptoms?

I had unprotected oral sex with a girl last week. Two days later I had throat inflammation. We went to the clinic together and discovered that she has genital herpes. Does that mean that I have automatically contracted the virus? A fever accompanies the inflamed throat and anal irritation. She was given prescribed medication while I just got sent home with 4 pills and shot for treatment of gonorrhea or chlamydia (just in case). There are no sores on my face yet and no burning urination, but there's no way I could have escaped that right?

I figured it out. Did some research on skin infections and diseases because these ovular things started appearing all over my face, but then I started thinking about allergens and itching all over the body and that got me thinking of HIVES. Viral infections, such as herpes, can cause viral hives as a reaction to the body's defense mechanism. Called my dad, (who is a doctor - i know i failed to mention this, but its quite embarrassing telling him everything), and he immediately understood what i was explaining and told me to get Benadryl which is already helping so much. As far as officially diagnosing Herpes (still playing the waiting game). I wish my dad could look at me but he's 300 + miles away.

whatever is going on, it's not likely to be due to herpes.  continue to follow up with your doctors as needed. have you seen a neurologist yet?

Makes perfect sense. I have been in so much pain all day. My face has been tingling, burning, and stinging and I also sense this feeling all over my body. In my hands, legs, and sides (stinging). Doctors are confused because they can't find lesions. I pointed out the anal fissure but they're stumped because there was no contact and they couldnt see anything on my face? Herpes or not, this is very aggressive. Can herpes put the body in shock like this?

nothing you contract orally is going to affect your genital area.  the virus doesn't travel through the body to infect the genital area.  You have to have genital contact to get anything in the genital area.

can you contract herpes both orally and genitally around the same time? sure you can but you have to have both oral and genital contact with someone infected with herpes.  make sense?

I feel like everyone is still uncertain about how the virus functions. Is it unheard of to have genital symptoms although there was only oral activity? Like, I wouldn't imagine HSV I contracted orally would affect my genitals. Is it possible that maybe HSV II could? I guess that stems up another question. Is it possible for the strands to affect both your genitals and oral/face at the same time?

you need to wait at least 3 months after the last time you had sex for igg blood testing. it can take that long for detectable antibodies to be developed to be detected on the test.

if you have active symptoms, a lesion culture can be done but it needs done as early into symptoms as possible.

Why would the virus be hard to detect via blood test if you're currently experiencing symptoms?

Yea that's what I was asking. I probably did test too early. How long should I wait before I retest?

if your hsv2 igg is 1 then yes it's negative unless you tested too early ( or am I misunderstanding what you are asking? )

so are you telling me that this is totally incorrect?

the way they do the test you never get a zero for a result.

Equivocal: 0.9-1.0
positive >1.0

*For some reason it didn't post these

The doctor said that it could be a yeast infection from the antibiotics given for treatment of the possible chlamydia or gonorrhea (which happened weeks ago). However my results came in today.

Negative: 1.0

Result: <0.9
NEGATIVE

How is that negative? If something is detected at all, then shouldn't it be positive? I'll admit i'm not understanding this.

it's doubtful this is a wart on your tongue. see your provider today or tomorrow for further work up.   stop back and let us know how things went.

I feel like everyone has an answer for my oral issue but why is this affecting my genitalia? My clothes were not removed and there was no hand to genitalia contact. I discovered this wart on my tongue this morning. Right now I'm thinking that she hit me with a double whammy of HSV and HPV. Genital warts wouldn't cause the fever symptoms and the only contact was oral.  HSV, depending on which kind, can still affect the genital region even without contact and my symptoms read true.  I'm finally getting the official HSV tests tomorrow so we'll know then. But now I have to go and the get this wart checked out today.

no reason to think oral hpv.

acyclovir "working" really doesn't mean anything anyways, anything viral was going to run its course in 1-3 weeks on its own even without treatment.

it's the sore throat time of the year.  really no reason to think a std. cover your bases for peace of mind and go from there so you can move on :)

encourage your former partner to seek out a full work up on her own too - sounds like she's a little "messed up" at the moment.

We are not in a relationship but we communicate daily.  She called me the other day to say that it was a misdiagnosis and that she was diagnosed with genital warts and that she had a pregnancy scare due to the fact that she read the home test wrong. There is too much going on that I just need confirmation. So I'm still getting the herpes test and if that is negative or inconclusive I will be checked for anything and everything else. She keeps telling me "You probably don't have anything." But I have gone through so much this past week and a half  that I know it's not just nothing. I definitely know it's viral that's for sure because this ancyclovir has definitely helped. I just need to put this to rest so I can know how to treat this and prevent spreading whatever this may be. So I'm trying to put the pieces together. Oral hpv? But then again it affected my genitals as well. I'm not even freaked out about this anymore. I'm more like fascinated by it. It's just unbelievable...I was fully clothed and licking her genitals made my body go into shock. And so fast. I wish I had stayed pre-med...

your partner needs to pursue proper type specific herpes igg testing. the herpes testing with the pap test isn't always accurate and being pregnant she needs to confirm her status properly.

are you still with this partner?

She never had an actual test. They "concluded" this from her pap smear.  Unfortunately for me I feel that diagnosis was correct because I am now experiencing tingling in my face and an appearance of a sore.  I have an appointment to get a conclusive diagnosis but as far as i can tell that I have herpes. I think that she was approaching an outbreak because of her stressful condition and the fact that she just found out that she is PREGNANT. (I mean how much worse can this get?) Now she experienced bumps on her genital area and severe itching for a few days and after taking ancyclovir they have subsided.

performing pap while you had your period was inappropriate. The provider needs to update their knowledge to better serve their patients.  You can test for vaginitis and std's while you have your period but you can't do a pap.  it often comes back falsely abnormal during menstruation which is why it shouldn't be done.

so do you have any idea what testing your partner had done that came back as + for herpes?

Its not that at all.  It's that you need proper testing to find out if you have something to worry about.  If your partner had nothing then you couldn't have had an initial outbreak from herpes.  It's a process to which we always recommend that testing.

We just want you to get testing to help in the process of elimination as well as helping to know what you have or don't have.  It helps believe me.

Yes she would have had symptoms on her face since she never had genitial contact and the partner didn't perform oral sex on her.

If she only preformed oral sex on her partner, she wouldn't develop any symptoms in her genitals (or anus), right?...like it would appear in her throat. mouth, etc?..

I asked if it was possible or appropriate to give a pap smear during menstruation and she said that it can be done and that it needed to be done. And I guess you're sounding like it's pretty confirmed that I have contracted the virus. So basically I have to find out which type and learn my options on how to treat it. Got it. Thanks.

you should've never had a pap test done while you are menstruating. are you sure that's what they did or did they just do std testing?

at this point you'll both need to follow up with type specific herpes igg blood tests to see who has what.  your partner needs to follow up on her symptoms too.  should either of you get new lesions before then, be seen promptly for lesion cultures and typing.  I know it's not fast and easy answers but it's the best you can do at this point.
