Herpes Test

I recently got the IGG blood test for herpes (first time ever tested) and to my surprise, I came back positive for both HSV1 > 5 (no surprise ) and HSV2 > 3.37 which shocked me considering I always practice safe sex (except for one time almost 20 yrs ago) and have never had an outbreak in my genital area.  I have had only one outbreak on my face about 10 years (fever blisters).  I did have the test repeated a few days later and both tests came back over 5 which made me wonder about how accucrate these numbers are.

Through some digging on the web, I have come across some comments that say a positve HSV1 test can potentially cause the HSV2 result to come in higher. Is this possible?  I had always hoped one day I could get married and have unprotected sex.  It seems that if I truly do have HSV2, I would never put my partner in that position.  In any case, do you think that I do have HSV2 or should I take another test such as the western blot test.  Thank you

It's not likely that your hsv2 igg is a false positive but if you need the peace of mind, by all means seek out a herpes WB blood test to confirm your status.

Wait for grace to get you a response.  If you haven't seen anything in 24hrs simply reply to your thread with "bump"

I have been having sex consistently (weekly) with my girlfriend with a condom for the last few months (she tested negative for both hsv 1 and hsv2.)  I have never had any genital breakouts, and it never crossed my mind that I could even  have HSV2.  I only took the test because my gf and I wanted to have unprotected sex

Just so I understand your testing.  You know about your HSV-1 result so you aren't surprised.  It is your HSV-2 test.

Your HSV-2 test was done and the first test was a IGG and the result came back 3.37 you then followed up with another test which came back at 5.0 correct?  If so I would ask that you wait for Grace to respond to your lab results and give you a better idea.  I am going to give you some information but let her advice stick.

Condoms don't do much for protecting against Herpes.  They are only about 30% effective.

With that being said having HSV-2 doesn't prevent you from having unprotected sex (if grace suggests that you do) and in fact can be easily controlled and risk to your partner can be lowered pretty well as long as you avoid sexual encounters during times where anything genital is going on and taking daily supressive therapy.

When was the last time you had sex before the testing was done?
