Herpes and Oral Sex

Hi, I recently found out that my girlfriend has Genital Herpes. I performed unprotected oral sex on her and am afraid to contract Herpes on my face.

She is taking anti-viral medication and was not in an outbreak. Are the chances slim ?

I would like to be able to do it again, but don't want to be playing with fire either...

I'm going to assume that your gf has hsv2 and you don't ( confirm that she knows she has hsv2 genitally and not hsv1, also if you've never been tested for herpes - go get tested to see ifyou even have to worry about transmission or not ).  If you two did nothing but avoid sex during any obvious genital symptoms in your gf - you'd be about 96% likely each year NOT to contract hsv2 from her.  Her taking daily suppressive therapy cuts your risk at least in half ( she needs to remember to take it everyday in order for it to work properly ).  Throw in condoms to boot and you are looking at average at a 99% risk each year of contracting hsv2 from her.  Could you contract hsv2 orally? Yes you can but it's a lowered risk. To greatly simplify it the virus just doesn't like the oral area so it doesn't often infect there. If you are concerned about contracting hsv2 orally though you can utilize barrier protection when performing oral sex on your gf.

Yes, she does have HSV-2.

I am relieved to finally receive a comment based on medical facts. Most people are just grossed out by herpes and hastily respond in a negative way.

I'm going to get tested this week. I did not show any symptoms so far, but I will protect myself adequately in order to lower the risks.

I really like this girl and would like to see a future with her, and understand what she is going through, instead of running away, afraid of what I might get.
