I recently had blood drawn for a PCR test to diagnose HSV. It came back negative. My question is, does the HSV have to be active for it to show up in a PCR test? Does the virus have to be shedding? Also, would taking acyclovair affect the PCR test in anyway? Would taking the PCR test only 26 days after possible exposure affect the test or do I need to wait longer? My last question is this, would antibodies show up in my blood work after 26 days for an IgG test. Thank you and I appreciate any help that would help me sleep better at night. Thank you.
pcr can not be used for blood testing to diagnose herpes. You need to get a type specific herpes igg blood test drawn but you need to wait until 4 months post encounter for it to be accurate.
