Herpes on back

My wife has had bouts with Herpes on her lower back and takes Valtrex to minimize outbreaks.  She has had an outbreak recently.  Although she does not have outbreaks in the genital area, can I contract the disease by having sex with her?

yes you can. she still has genital herpes even though she isn't getting obvious symptoms in the genital area. Absolutely no difference in her infection or someone who gets lesions on their actual genitals with recurrences.
