Herpes or Stress

Hello

I had unprotected oral sex (cunnilingus) with a stripper 2 1/2 weeks ago - Friday will be 3 weeks. That night when I got home I took a shower and scrubbed my face with a cheap bar of soap. The next day I woke up and my lips were burning. The following couple of days I was exposed to sun/wind/cold. My lips continued to be chapped and had an unusual buring feeling, alomost sticky at times - especially in the middle of my upper lip.

Eventually my mouth and tongue became sensative and I went to the doctor a week after the contact becasue I thought my tongue had some unusal bumps on the side. He looked at my lips and mouth and found nothing out of the ordinary....I was relieved, did not mention the oral sex and left without having any blood work done.

However, my lips still feel very unusual. The burning seems to be more concentrated now - in the middle center of my upper lip and my lower lip is still chapped. I have been examining my lips like crazy and have not had any blisters form. However, my lips seem a little more red, once in awhile I think I see a red circular bump starting....but they seem to go away. I usually do not study my lips this carefully so the redness, etc could be normal.

So, I've read that the normal timeframe from contact to symptoms is 2-12 days (avergae of 4), but not all people show symptoms. Is it possible that my body is just suppressing it but I'm still slightly symptomatic? It's been almost 3 weeks now since contact - should I be seeing fever blisters by now? I haven't been felling real well - flu like symptoms directly after contact for about a week, now I have a slight cold/respiratory infection.

I obviously have been extremely stressed over the situation. Is it possible stress is causing this reaction in my body? I've read that the risk of Herpes from cunnilinhus is low and I realize the only way to find out for sure is to have blood work done. Do my symptoms sound like I have it or do you think my mind is getting the better of me?

Thanks - I really appreciate your time.

That particular question, HHH was replying to that person acquiring hsv2 genitally from having oral sex performed on him.  Not sure if his whole reply was directed at that specific scenario or not.  the odds of someone having hsv2 orally and transmitting it to someone by performing oral on them are incredibly low.

You can contract hsv2 orally. It happens. As HHH even said in that same post you referenced, it typically occurs hsv2 orally and genitally at the same time ( because most folks are engaging in both activities during the same encounter ).  Even though he hasn't personally seen it himself, it obviously does occur as he referenced in his reply.  Quite a few studies out there showing that indeed folks do contract hsv2 orally. since in order to get it orally you'd have to perform oral sex, it occurs.   the risk of it occurring is quite low in general but it does occur.

That said, your symptoms sound more like chapped lips or a fungal infection of the lips than anything.

Firstly, Grace thank you very much for taking the time to moderate and answer questions.

One more question. In reading thru the forums I noticed an answer from H. Hunter Handsfield, M.D. that states, "Oral herpes due to HSV-2 is rare; almost all cases are due to HSV-1.  Therefore, it is rare for someone to aquire genital HSV-2 from oral sex, if it happens at all.  In 30+ years in the STD business, I have not seen or even heard of such a case."

So from this is it accurate to say that if the person has HSV-2 that it most likely would not be passed via oral sex, but if they had HSV-1 that it could/would be passed via oral sex? Sorry, to nitpick....just really nervous.

Thanks again!

this could be many things so returning to your provider is the best course of action. mention the oral sex. ask  if this could be a fungal infection and discuss together if it's worth oral testing for std's too.
