Herpes or skin disorder?

For the past few years, I have developed these skin colored bumps on the vermilion edge of my lips. They do not look like cold sores, they are not filled with puss, and only grow to about 1 to 2mm in size and go away in a day or two. Not sure what it could be? I'm hoping not herpes.. I've never kissed anyone with a cold sore or anyone who admitted to having herpes.

you really need to go and be seen and get these looked at if they are bothering you.  They could be oral herpes but odds are it's something else going on. You can get more obvious old glands on the areas you are describing too.

If you want to know if you have herpes, get a type specific herpes igg blood test. Just keep in mind that even if you come back as hsv1+ as most adults do, doesn't mean that these symptoms are due to herpes.  Start keeping a diary of when you have symptoms along with what you were doing, signs of illness, foods you were eating etc. Sometimes that is helpful when you get to the dermatologist for a further work up.

It could be an allergic reaction, or it could be your imagination.  Do not doubt the power of imagination.  The mind can create far reaching sensations for something that really isn't there.  That's not to say I doubt the presence of your "bumps", but it surely isn't herpes.  You may want to see your health care provider concerning a possible tomato allergy, considering that it is a common food ingredient.  In the mean time, avoid pizza and just relax

Okay I'm back.. feeling not as worried thanks to you! Another bump appeared on the top part of my lip.. my eyes feel itchy now; i would say that the bump grows and causes my lips to swell. I think I ~may~ have found the culprit. Possible allergic reaction? Not sure what exactly it is from but I know that I ate pizza this afternoon... the bump formed and then my lip swelled up. I ate pizza again an hour ago... new bump with swelling. It sounds likely that it is the tomatoes. I also noted that on New Years Eve, I ate pizza and a bump grew on my lip within an hour and disappeared the next day! This can't be herpes... the time frame for these bumps is just ridiculous. I also asked my mom if she's ever noticed cold sores on me and she assured me that I have not had any. She also pointed out, as you had mentioned, that cold sores are very noticeable.

The HSV-1 virus can vary in its appearance.  But the normal cold sore generally consists of one or more blisters with reddened skin surrounding them.  They are generally very noticeable and cause a bit of discomfort.  You say these tiny bumps disappear within a few days.  Cold sores generally last a week or so, and possibly longer to heal before disappearing.  I'm obviously no doctor, and I don't know what your bumps look like past what you've described, but I'd say you do not have a cold sore.

But remember, the majority of people do have cold sores.  Its one of the most common viruses in the world, so I wouldn't worry if you ever do get a cold sore.  It's normal, everyone gets them.

Regarding your eye: considering that these bumps you have don't sound like cold sores, I wouldn't worry yourself over it at all.  It is true that the herpes virus can be highly infectious, but an infection of the eye is not particularly common.  Just for the future, if you ever do run into anything resembling herpes on your body, make sure to wash your hands after touching it.

Just relax and feel better

I really hope not. The bumps are not even noticeable they're that tiny. I was always under the impression that cold sores were noticeable, puss-filled, crusty blister-like things - something that I've never had. What I'm scared of is the fact that I touched this little bump.. and unconsciously touched my eye. I thought about it a few seconds later and then realized that herpes can infect the eye.. Should I be worried?

Chances are it's not oral herpes.  Especially if the bumps come and go within a day or two.
