Herpes results

Hello,
About a year and a half ago, I had an HSV-2 test done at my clinic.  The results came back 1.13, and my doctor said that was positive.  I then found out through this sight about low-positives and to use Herpes Select testing.  I went back to my doctor and tested again, this time using the Herpes Select test.  The results came back .84, which is negative.
Ok, so this year at the end of February I had sex with a girl who said she was clean, but I had my suspicions later.  I tested right away for everything, and tested negative for all.  Then I waited 13 weeks and got tested again.  This time I did HSV-1 and HSV-2, but not with the Herpes Select.  I tested as folows:

HSV-1:  greater than 5
HSV-2:  1.73

I am hoping the HSV-2 is a low-positive that turns out to be negative like the last time.  I asked my doctor if he used the Herpes Select this time, and he said no, so I want him to test for HSV-2 again and make sure he uses the Herpes Select.  So my question is: do you think the 1.73 could be a false postive like last time?  Thank you for your input.

you can use female condoms - you don't need to maintain an erection to use those.

best of luck!!

LOL- I like your last sentence.  Funny thing about going to school- I am 37 and just went back to college.  I have had a girlfriend that I have been with for almost 5 months.  We have been taking it very slow, so haven't had sex yet- she is scared of intimacy because of some life traumas, but I am nurturing.  Anyway, she has to move two hours away to another state to help with her grandchild.  It'll be hard for us to keep our long term relationship together, but we'll try.  There are lots of cute young women in college, but no one compares to my girlfriend.  She and I have been friends for over two years, and we love eachother very very much.  It is sad that she has to go- I don't want her to.  I promised myself I wouldn't have sex with anyone until I was in a committed, loving relationship.  I just had that, and now it may dissolve.  I want to have sex, but will probably remain abstinent.  I am so paranoid about herpes, although I can now proudly say that I have never had a single STD ever.  I hope I never do.  Sex is not as important to me these days. Every sexual encounter I have had the last few years has not been my intention.  I was just looking for someone to snuggle with.  I guess it's hard to resist the temptation to have sex when there is a warm sexy body in my arms.  I almost feel obligated to the woman to do that. My last girlfriend of 13 years was not very affectionate at all, especially the last 4 years.  I just want someone special in my life that is safe and committed and loving.  It took me almost 4 years to find this new love, and I want her to be my wife.  I have never been married.  I hope I don't have to wait more years to have sex.  I have ED from a back injury, and condoms make it difficult to function.  I have had a vasectomy, so pregnancy is not a concern- that may almost be a problem since it's much more easy to justify not using a condom.  What a predicatment, but way less of a problem if my chances of finding someone was reduced because of having genital herpes.  My last girlfriend cheated on me because I wouldn't have sex with her between the first time I tested low positive and 4 months later when I tested negative.  I almost felt like suing the HerpeSelect company for damages.  I still want to find out if I can.  The emotional stress and trauma I went through the last few years, let alone the countless time I spent looking at stuff about herpes, was a major load on my life.  I feel for anyone who gets false postitives and has to go through what I did.  Ok, will focus on the good now...................................

glad you called them :)  They really do seem to be very helpful when folks call and since they are tops in the field of herpes testing there, they generally know what they are talking about!

hopefully you are smarter than some of the residents I've had to deal with these past 2 months....lol  just LOVE july and august with the fresh out of school newbies....NOT!!!

Hello,
Hopefully I won't have to talk about my dilemma over this anymore and will be abstinent until I am in a safe, committed relationship, and won't ever have to worry about HSV-2 again .  It's been going for over 3 years now that I have been struggling with this, but I finally got the answer I wanted.  Thank you for suggesting to call the U of W lab.  I talked to a viral expert where the Western Blot was developed.  Based on my facts, she is confident that I am HSV-2 negative.  She said that a very small percentage of people like me will consistantly test "inderterminate" on the WB- it is just a mechanism of those peope's immune system that cause it.  I really appreciate your help and this website.  I have learned pretty much everything there is to know about herpes. Now I can educate others.  I just started going to school to become a doctor- maybe I will be a herpes expert :)  Ok, thanks again!

it's unfortunate when the WB returns that way :(  typically they repeat it later on and compare the 2 results to get a better idea of your status.

wish I could help more but really nothing else I can add at this point. you might even want to just call the U of washington and ask to talk to someone and perhaps they can offer advice. often you get to talk to some of the top herpes researchers in the US when you call there :)

Hello again, Grace,
I finally got the Western Blot.  Here is my HSV-2 testing history again and my Western Blot results:

January 2009
HSV-2 IgG:     1.13

May 2009
HSV-2 IgG:     0.84

March 2010
Had sex with a girl, her on top, vigorously.  I had just shaved my pubic hair for the first time with electric clippers (never with a razor).  Two and a half days later had about a 2" diameter area with scattered small red bumps.  They never blistered, hurt, oozed, or scabbed over- they lasted for about a week and faded away.  Two days after they appeared, I went to a doctor who said it was probably folliculitis, and there was nothing for him to culture.  I had no fever, no swollen glands, no discharge.  Got tested anyway.
Result:  Negative (didn't get an IgG that time)

June 2010
Waited 12 weeks after above encounter, then got tested
HSV-2 IgG:       1.73
HSV-1 IgG:        greater than 5

July 2010
HSV-2 IgG:       1.34

October 2011
HSV-2 IgG:       1.18

August 2012
Hadn't touched a woman in 4 months (gave oral to her), hadn't had intercourse for 7 months (with a person I am almost 100% sure does not have herpes)
Had sex with someone 9 months prior that I don't know very well

Western Blot  result:   Indeterminate

The results say to wait 12-16 weeks and do the Western Blot again.  I already spent $230 to get the test done and my blood sent.  I hadn't had intercourse in 7 months.  My doctor says I should stop getting tested, that she is certain I don't have herpes.  She says that she doesn't even like to do the blood tests anymore because of the false positives.  She says she only likes to test for herpes when there is apparent symptoms and she can get a culture.  She says that the rash I had in 2009 didn't sound like herpes to her either.  This has been so frustrating.  I thought the Western Blot would solve it for sure.  I assume that I am negative since it has been so long since I have had intercourse or even touched a woman- I would think there would be a positive diagnosis after that long.  Thank you Grace for all your help and taking the time to read this.

I doubt they accept medicare actually since it's not a FDA approved test. you'll have to pay out of pocket for it.

Lol, I know. I should just follow through with the WB.  Someone posted that it is almost $300, but I followed a link you gave me that said it is $162.50.  It may be a few months before I can come up with that.  I do have Medicare, so going to see if they accept that.  I will share the results. Thanks again!

Hi,
I am back again.  Here is my background:

Tested positive for HSV2 around January 2009
IgG: 1.13

Tested negative for HSV2 around May 2009
IgG: o.84

Tested negative for HSV2 around March 2010
IgG: don't know

Tested postitive for HSV2 and positive for HSV1 in June 2010
IgG: 1.73 for HSV2
IgG: greater than 5 for HSV1

Tested positive for HSV2 in July 2010
IgG: 1.34

Tested positive for HSV2 October 2011, another year later
IgG: 1.18

I consistantly test either low positive or sometimes negative without having any noticable symptoms.  I think I a had couple cold sores 2 years ago which were very minor, and only got them that year (thought they were pimples near my mouth), otherwise never had them before (I am 36).  I may have contracted HSV1 2-3 years ago and maybe that is causing the false HSV2 readings.  What do you think?  Thank you again for all your help.  I think I need to go for the Western Blot at this point, just don't have the money for that now.

definitely follow up on it. odds are you don't have hsv2.

Well, got my Herpeselct test back for HSV-2.

IgG is 1.38

Still a low positive.  My doctor said I could wait a few more months and try again, but said at this point he wouldn't.  I told him about Western Blot and Biokit, so I guess I should look into that.  Or should I just figure I have HSV-2?

Tested last year:

1st was 1.13
2nd was 0.84

Tested this year:

1st was 1.73
2nd is 1.38

Ok.  I have an apointment with my doctor on Monday to get a HerpeSelect A/B HSV-2 w/reflex test done.  He doesn't know how to access a Western Blot, but I will talk to him about Biokit.  I am not sure if my Medicare would cover those, so I'll get the HerpeSelect done first.  I'll let you know if I have any more questions and what next week's result is.  I have never had an obvious cold sore, so I am not sure if the HSV-1 is oral or genital outbreak either.

A 2nd test to confirm your status is a good idea. You can use a herpes WB or a biokit.
