So, my understanding is that the only way for someone to know for sure if they have herpres or not is to wait 3 months after a possible exposure and then do the test . Is it also true that if you've had cold sores in the past -like most of us do- your hsv test will be positive ? But then again that doesn't prove that you have herpes. Am I right ? I'd appreciate a reply.

The type specific herpes igg blood tests do differentiate between hsv1 and hsv2. You need to wait 4 months after the encounter for the blood test to be most accurate.
