Herpes?

I developed some redness on my glans at the end of June (08) that never hurts or itches but only is irritated when it rubbing against my boxers.
It started on one side and has grown around the ridge.
As an erection goes down the head seems a lot more red.
Some days the redness is almost completely gone, the next it is fairly red, this also happens in just one day.
I went to a doctor and he said it was jock itch or some yeast infection and to use a spray on it.
I used Lotrimin and nothing has really changed.
It's been over 6 months now and nothing has improved or gotten worse.
I am sexually active and lately have been having unprotected sex with a girl from a "developing" nation. I don't know if that matters though.
Also, not to lead anyone to conclusions but it has a strange bread-like smell.

Help me please. I'm horrified that it is herpes.

Thank you so much. I will be going in as soon as I am done with the semester. Unfortunately that is another 2 weeks.

At this point you need to see a dermatologist for further work up. This isn't herpes I can tell you that but you need proper testing to see if indeed it is a fungal infection or if it's something else like a dermatological skin condition going on.
