Herpeselect HSV 2 positive 1.38

Hello, I am extremely confused and scared.  Went to the doctor and had a check up with bloodwork.  Bloodwork for the Herpeselect HSV 2 IGG (from quest diagnostics) came back positive, 1.38.  I have only had one partner all of my life and have been with for 8 years.  I truly believe that he has not slept with anyone else (and of course i asked the question, and he said no).  So I'm really confused, how could I have gotten it?  Can it be a false positive?

I have never had any signs or symptoms of herpes and neither has my partner.

Thank you for your time.

At this point I recommend your partner get tested for hsv2 and see what his results are. If he's negative then I'd repeat your blood test.  If you can find a clinic near you that offers the biokit - you can get your answers for both of you in 20 minutes which I think would be very helpful for you!  As emma covered in her post - there is a false positive rate wtih the tests so ruling that out with your low hsv2 result would be in your best interest.

Did you have an HSV-1 IgG test done?  Sometimes positive HSV-1 results will cause false positive HSV-2 results.  Since your ratio is lower than 3.0, it is possible you had a false positive.  My advice would be to get retested, possibly with a different test, such as Biokit or Western Blot.  Herpes test results need to be taken in context.  Since you have been with your partner for 8 years and do not believe he has been with anybody else, I would test again.  Of course, I cannot guarantee that you had a false positive, but it's definitely possible.
Good luck,
Em
