How Long for Serology to be positive

Ok, the last time I had sex was in September 2010.  I had sex with the same man for August and September...September 21, 2010 I went to the doctor with what looked like a blood blister type of thing on the pubic area of my labia...that I have many places all over my body, skin tags, etc.  The doctor blurts out Herpes.  So he gave me Valtrex prescription, and sent me for blood tests, and took cultures, etc.  I was last tested on January 11, 2011 and I am still testing negative for cultures and IgG blood tests.  I haven't had any blisters or "outbreaks", but I have this constant tingling!!!  How much longer will it take to test positive if I have herpes?  What else could this be if not herpes?

I think you should listen to grace.

People test at a year sometimes and test positive.  This is to say that maybe a previous test missed it.  Which they do some times.  The side to remember is that the majority of people will test positive on a test.  Some need a culture to prove they have HSV.

I was thinking the opposite...so if I take them and my symptoms go away, then I can kind of figure I do have it...or, can the anti virals help with symptoms from some other issue?  I am almost thinking that if I can convince myself that the anti-virals have helped and then stop taking them that maybe this will all pass...or at least if this is some kind of lingering OB that maybe it is finally over?  I don't know, I give up.

I did take them 3/day Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and yesterday.  I am going to see how I feel today without taking anymore... so far I feel pretty sypmtom free compared to how I felt on Thursday.  If the normal dosage is 3/day for 10 days, and the symptoms do not go away, can the OB really beat out the Valtrex?  If the symptoms do not go away, can I then trust that this is indeed NOT Herpes?

From reading all the posts, and not having a typical textbook OB I am not sure that I trust any of the blood testing...seeing that a few people have tested for more than 7 months to a year and then finally testing positive.

All the doctors (and being in the big city with some of the best medical people) All of them tell me that by now I would have definately tested postive if in fact I had HSV, but honestly, I am beginning to disbelieve this.

The antivirals will not harm you.  But should be avoided when trying to figure out if you have herpes or not.

Ok, so what is the risk, if any of taking the anti-virals before a diagnosis of HSVII is confirmed?  Will these harm me if I do not have HSV?

probably is dear. herpes antivirals don't work that fast.

Okay, let me look into this.

I did take a Valtrex this morning fed up and seems the cutting feeling inside has subsided and this has been going on for days.  That is why I asked if taking it would be bad even if I didn't have H.  This relief worries me.  Is this psychosomatic?

perhaps an urogynecologist would be a good 2nd opinion for you at this point.

no, they never prescribe that cream for herpes relief. topical steroids make genital herpes more active.

your symptoms do not sound like herpes going on.  have they done an ultrasound yet or anything?

Hi Grace,

I would say that I have had pretty consistent issues since late September incident, vaginal cramping, feeling like things crawling around in pubic area, feeling like knife stabbing in my vagina, pinching feelings around the outside of my vagina and labia where it meets pubic area, -red itchy and tender in creases around labia.  Initially, September, October, November & December flu like symptons non-stop, sore throat that would reaccur almost weekly...the doctor prescribed me Valtrex (as described in my initial post)  so I have some and I would take it out of paranoia...for about a day or two, maybe once I took it for a week.  I think it made me feel better, I am having trouble remembering now...when I first recently started taking the yeast meds Feb 5 (the oral thing Fluconazole)...once a week (he has me taking it for three months) then I had the Clotrimazole and Betamethasone Dipropionate which I used for about two weeks...(this helped alot) but the insides are still feeling like cuts and the pinching feeling still persists with vaginal cramping/pain, some pain in hip joint.  Just nothing seems right.  My doctor barely found any yeast but I think he is grappling for a diagnosis.  I have been tested for the gammit of STDs, full blood work, etc. HSVI and II multiple times at LabCorp everything coming back Negative.  I am in my 4th week of Fluconazole, with two months more prescribed.  Symptoms coming and going, some days relief, but NOT going away.  So I am trying to put HSV out of my mind, but I am pretty in tune with my body and something is telling me that this is something more.  Can't get it out of my mind.  Do they ever prescribe Clotrimazole and Betamethasone Dipropionate for HSVII relief?  Just curious.  Thank you again.

Any good idea for Psycho drugs that make you stop thinking you have HSVII when you really don't?  I am just feeling so bad that I am convinced I have H and I do not know what to do.

no, herpes lesions will heal in 1-2 weeks on their own even without treatment. There are also clear periods in between recurrences where you have no symptoms.

time to start thinking non-herpes reasons for your continuing issues.  does everything look normal when they examine you?

Okay, so let's say herpes not detected in blood test +6 months possible exposure, treated for potential bacterial infection, treated for potential yeast infection, neither seems to be getting to the crux.  Let's say symptoms persist, feelings like cuts on the inside of Vagina...could these cuts, if herpetic, or even microscopic lesions, could these, left untreated, say with Valtrex, persist for months? Meaning never go away?  It feels like I have open cuts on the inside of my vagina.  I have had it scraped and cultured probably 3 times always coming back negative...but really think this has to be herpes.  Is it worth trying to take Valtrex to see if this goes away?  Is there a risk to taking Valtrex even if I really don't have herpes?  Whatever this condition is hanging around defying all my doctors, but one thing is for sure, it's been going on since that guy!

Is there a chance?  Yes.  Though its low.  You having the symptoms for so long excludes herpes.  At this point you need to get herpes off the brain.  :-)

I was tested again at 6 months. HSV 1 & 2 Igg.  Still negative.  I felt better for about a week, now not sure again.  My doctor is treating me for a "possible" chronic yeast infection...but I think it is something more.  Constant tingling.  Really is there any chance that after six months herpes wouldn't show up in your blood?

odds are it isn't herpes going on.

have you had a recurrence of your symptoms or did they clear up on their own?

How much Valtrex did you take (if any)?  Are you still on it?

Has your partner from August & September been tested?

not much would cause that issue.  Each person is different though.

Any idea what kinds of things would delay anti bodies in building up in someone's blood?

If you have tested as of January and you have let enough time go by for the tests to be positive.  Visual diagnoisis is wrong at least 1/3 of the time by even the herpes experts.
