How do you differentiate between an outbreak and a bladder infection?

Hi, i have type 1 genital herpes and i have been taking acylcoir 3x a day ever since i got it about 2 months ago. Recently i have been having pain in my lower back, low abdominal pain, and pain while peeing. Is it possible that it is an outbreak coming through even though im taking the anti-virals? Or could it be a bladder infection?

You need to follow up on that with your provider. It sounds more like an infection than it does herpes.

The dose for suppressive therapy with acyclovir is 400mg 2x/day. That said, most folks with hsv1 genitally don't get ob's enough to make it worth taking suppressive therapy. Just something to think about.
