That's what I'm referring to. The chances of a false positive IgM test for you are quite high and it will be meaningless.
IgG tests also have a false positive rate and there is a chance that this could occur.
Can you clarify? I'm asking if you think hsv2 will come back negative on IGM test....why wouldn't it come back negative on IGG test like originally?
IgM, not sure, about 40%?
IgG I'd say nearly zero.
Chances of this coming back negative on second test??
Potentially antibodies associated with your HSV1 infection or other protein junk that has simply stuck to the testing well (this happens a lot).
ThAnks for feedback...also what could caused IGM test to be positive for hsv 2 in my situation?
No, it takes around 7 days for IgM antibodies to be detected (meaning genuine antibodies) and 21 days for IgG antibodies.
Can you have a hsv2 outbreak or hsv2 show up in a test 4-5 days after sexual encounter?
There isn't a whole lot more that can be said. IgM is simply not credible in adults. You can ask the doctor why it is that CDC do not recommend IgM testing be undertaken in adults. Its only purpose is for children.
Either way it simply does not matter what the IgM test says. Unless you turn positive for HSV2 IgG antibodies then you do not have HSV2.... period.
I am not sure what she is trying to accomplish with another blood test. If IGG comes back negative for hsv2 and positive for hsv1 and the IGM comes back positive for hsv2 and negative for hsv1 what is the outcome? She made it seem like she will be shocked if IGM
Test comes back negative for both putting a lot of emphasis on that test. Could my IGM test originally come back positive for hsv2 because of fungal infection I had or 2 months prior shingles outbreak?
I don't know how I can ever put my mind to ease with this. Both tests contradict each other. I even had a high hsv1 on IGG but none at all all on IGM. Please keep communication going ..education seems to be the best thing for me right now . Thanks in advance
I am sorry this specialist is as uninformed as your doctor. A 16 week test is in theory required to be conclusive around a negative. Let's see what this test reveals.
Just got out of infectious disease doctor. She said that she is confident that I have HSV 2 due to my sexual history and tests. I explained that IGM tests in a lot of physicians opinions are not a reliable test. Brought up how I was negative for Hsv2 on IGG but this did not seem to be of importance to her. She checked my whole body and she said everything looked normal and that I can be a symptomatic. She ordered me to get blood work done again for hsv 1 and 2. She said she would be shocked if both came back negative.
I am still in absolute limbo here. She made it seem like I have to accept that I have this. So right now I have 2 physicians telling me I have it and a couple of you guys on here telling me I don't due to IGG test being negative.....please offer any info around what I am going through please.
There is a lack of understanding around IgM tests. This has happened to you. I would hope a specialist has more understanding but take your tests and discuss the inaccuracy of IgM testing in adults with HSV1!
Last Thursday primary care physician called me to tell me I have hsv 1 & 2. Went and picked up bloodwork on Monday. IGG test I was 0.13 for hsv2 and 32.10 for hsv1. My IGM tests stated I am positive for hsv2 and not one. Why did my PC doctor tell me I have HSV2??
Also, I booked an appointment with an infectious disease doctor tomorrow. What should I do? I am
Brining my bloodwork in. Hopefully this doc has some expertise in this matter.
A conclusive outcome will be if you test again at 16 weeks post this recent blood test. A negative IgG for HSV2 at that time will be conclusive that you do not have the virus.
What do you recommend to put my mind at ease 100
Percent? Should I do more blood work? If so what specifically? Should I get another opinion on my blood work?
All antibody tests are subject to a degree of error with proteins in the blood that aren't the antibodies being tested for actually stick to the testing wells and cause a false positive.
This happens quite often with IgM testing which is why the results need to be ignored.
Do not stop using the cream, this is more than likely not herpes.
Also only thing I am dealing with is some swollen lymph nodes and redness on penis that my dermatologist (not my pc doc who gave me
Blood Results) thought was fungal and recommended anti fungal
Cream. I stopped using creme when doc said it was hsv2. I was in absolute shock
Thanks for feedback...I have an appointment with an infectious disease doctor Thursday. I am just confused that on the IGM test is said negative for hsv1 but positive for Hsv2 . I'm guessing this is what lead my doctor to tell me over phone I had hsv2 . If I dont have hsv2 then why even say on blood work I am positive for it?
Your doctor is uninformed.
The IgG test confirms that you have an established HSV1 infection, most probably oral. It confirms you do not have a HSV2 infection. However this does not rule out being infected within the last say 4-12 weeks.
As you have HSV1, then type specific IgM testing has no diagnostic value. False positives and false negatives far outweigh the correct results. This must be ignored.
Unless you have genital symptoms, that is, lesions, then you have no reason to suspect a HSV2 infection and can move on with confidence.
How does this information help your thinking?
