I AM PREGNANT AND WORRIED... I HAVE HERPES..

Please help me because i am very worried and i feel so alone.. I am 35 weeks pregnant.. Two weeks ago my gyn adviced me to have a herpes analysis, as he examined me and observed something strange on my genitals that looked like herpes. I had previously never had herpes of any kind, or that's what i thought..
I took the results today from my analysis and they show that i have an igG 17% and igM negative..
My doctor told me that i have to do a caesarian section which is not something i want to do.. i always wanted to give a natural birth to my baby and i cant stop crying now...
How do i know that i currently have herpes on my genital area, since the test doesnt indicate that? How dangerous is for me to have a natural birth? Is there any chance that i this will harm my baby? i even read about neonatal mortality.. is that true?
I would appreciate any answer from you.. Thank you so much, Kristina

thank you.. i hope you have everything you hope for in life.. i will let you know if anything changes. But i am more confident now to proceed into having a natural birth.. unless my doctor notices something as you said, then i will so as he says.

usually the obgyn can see them when they do their exam when you go into labor even if you can' t see/feel anything.

I also wanted to ask you whether you know if an outbreak of herpes is always obvious.. i mean is there a chance that you have an outbreak but you cant notice it on you? or does it always have obvious marks? thank you again

I have 2 kids and live in the US :)

I am not aware of the testing you are talking about. I don't know of any testing that is remotely accurate for detecting if herpes is going to be active for 3 days. honestly I wouldn't even waste your time or money on it.

Grace thank you so much once again!! I assume you are a mother too?Where are you from?
I found out that there is another test i can take, which is done at the Genetics Institute in my country. This test informs you whether your herpes is active at the time being and for the next three days.. I will discuss it with my new doctor and see whether we can cause labor earlier if the test comes out fine..I have an appointment tomorrow.. Its not the best thing to change doctors when you are pregnant and especially when it is your first but hopefully he will be more understanding and helpful..
By the way you seem to be so well informed and definitely knowledgeable, good on you!

igm testing isn't very accurate. it has false positives and false negatives and in the US, we no longer recommend its use because of the issues with it.  being pregnant can also cause false negatives with herpes testing in general once you get to the 3rd trimester.

it's unfortunate that this provider isn't very knowledgeable ( or is trying to make more money ) since it's too late in pregnancy to get better answers in general let alone change providers.

if you had herpes prior to becoming pregnant and don't have any obvious lesions at the time of delivery, it's a less than 1% risk of transmitting the virus to your baby during delivery.

don't apologize for writing too much!! You aren't getting the answers you need from your provider and it's a time when worrying is something we all do until you have that gorgeous baby safe in your arms :)

Hi Grace and thank you so much for your prompt reply.. I really appreciate it...
Could you please tell me how the specific herpes testing is called?
Could i ask you another question? Does the negative igM indicate that i was not recently infected with the virus? that is how i translated the results and i had my doubts about proceeding with a C Section. The problem in my country is that almost all private doctors are trying to lead women into C sections because they cost a lot and that way they would gain lots of money. That is why i have my doubts with the specific doctor.. I wish the medical system was everywhere like the US but unfortunately it isnt..

Well i have no other marks or an obvious lesion now, nor i actually did before, except from some irritation which might have been from the sea and not herpes.. i dont know.. it was gone after a few days..  My doctor said that herpes can be transmitted to the baby very easily and with vaginal fluids as well, and if your water breaks the baby is definitely infected..even if your herpes is not active. i am not sure i believe that..
im giving labor in 3 weeks and im soo anxious and stressed i hope everything works out fine and my baby gets born healthy..
Im sorry i wrote too much again this time:)
Have a beautiful day and take care xxx

the testing you had done was pretty much useless :(  the testing your provider is using will come back + on 3 out of every 4 of his patients so he shouldn't even be bothering to use it if that is all he is willing to use.   type specific testing is available throughout the world.

unfortunately you are due to deliver soon and still have no real answers whatsoever about your status. due to the lateness of your pregnancy, unless you have another obvious genital lesion to get cultured, really nothing you can do to confirm your status at this point.

I wish I could recommend something more specific but really you have no answers to know if you even have genital herpes or not at this point so I really can't make any recommendations.  in the US, we don't recommend automatically doing a c section just because of genital herpes . if there is an obvious lesion at the time of labor or genital herpes was contracted during the 3rd trimester are the only reasons we do c sections because of genital herpes.

we don't have testing that would have a result of 17%. are you in the US? Can you please call and ask them to read you the exact hsv2 igg blood test results to you, write them down and post them here?  make sure that it is a hsv2 igg and not a combined hsv1/2 igg. did your obgyn do a lesion culture on your actual symptoms or just blood work?

do you have a regular partner? if so, have they had type specific herpes igg blood testing to know what their status is?

do you have to have a c section just because you have herpes? no you do not but many things go into that decision and unfortunately this late into your pregnancy, you and your provider don't have a lot of the answers you really need to make this decision properly.

To be honest, I don't know what kind of test they did. I know they took a sample of what I thought was a boil and it turned out to be herpes. It hurt like heck because they had to squish it to get a good sample. I never even saw my results or anything. They kept a lot of information from me, fearing I would freak out and my blood pressure would become worse.

Hi girl thank you for answering... Im glad you had your little girl naturally. no he didnt give me any medication he only said that we dont know whether there will be an outbreak at the time of delivery so it is better to do a c section.. but i feel devastated.. did you have an igG positive and igM negative as i did? hope everything works out..

I found out I had herpes around the same time in my pregnancy. My doctor put me on anti virals and we just kept our eye out for any out breaks. From what my doctor told me, you'll only need a c section if their is an outbreak at time of delivery.  I had my lil girl naturally and she's perfectly fine. Did you doctor give you any medication to take?
