I'm a 28year-old man in china, I have genital herpes. And I have several (two in past two months) outbreaks. Can I have a baby? What can I do to reduce the risk for transmitt herpes to my wife(I told her the fact before marry)? Can I use the Valtrex(valacyclovir) once a day? Thank you for your help!

yes you can go on daily suppressive therapy with valtrex to help reduce transmission to your wife.  Just avoiding sex when you have obvious genital symptoms and taking daily suppressive therapy makes it on average 95-96% likely each year that you won't transmit hsv2 to her.

when she becomes pregnant, she should get a type specific herpes igg blood test done to see what her status is. If she's hsv2 negative, you should  discuss using condoms in addition to suppressive therapy for the rest of her pregnancy. She also should repeat her herpes igg blood testing at the start of her 3rd trimester. Never a bad idea to come back here at that time and we can help with how to handle your herpes and her pregnancy further if she tests negative again for hsv2.

Thank you very much, grace. I'd like to know if the suppressive therapy will have any adverse effects of fetus?
