I have just been diagnosed with Herpes Virus One(genital)

Fri and Sat I had sex with my boyfriend of 15 months, Fri he went down on me for quite an amount of time. Mon, Tue I started to feel this itch, this burn. Wed, Thu I noticed an ulcer that was sore and painful and light yellow grey in color. I also noticed I have a yeast infection. Fri I woke up with tender and swollen inguinal lymph nodes, I went in Friday. She drew blood work to test for HSV 1 and HSV 2 and both came back negative. However my scrape specimen test came back positive for HSV 1. I am currently on Valtrex and going through my first breakout, it is the worst pain, tenderness, soreness, and burning pain down there. What now? How do I carry on from this? How do I educate the guy in my life more( he is going to get tested)? How can I have sex again? What risks do I carry for the next guy in my life? How do I prevent more outbreaks?

I wouldn't stress to much over his test. It's clear who you got it from. Let me know how it turns out.

To answer your last question. Yes
Here is how this can happen... He very probably contracted hsv1 as a small child. The infection is well established and he doesn't get cold sores (very common). Now hsv1 testing isn't nearly as accurate as hsv2. It's still pretty good but it can miss at least 1 in 10 infections. Many experts believe it can be even more than that.
I expect your boyfriend will test positive. If he doesn't though. It doesn't mean he doesn't have it. The time frame for the oral sex he gave and your primary outbreak means it came from him.
Thank you for keeping me updated and I hope everything between you two are doing well.

Thank you thousand times over for all your prompt replies! I feel like I am pretty much over my outbreak now, it's been like twenty days since it all started. Seeing my ob/gyn tomorrow morning for clearance, advise, guidance, follow up etc. So far we are okay and normal. But I am fearful if he tests negative he may rethink us and be afraid or different around me.
I'm thinking he may test positive cause 3-4 days after my breakout he had one day of fever, headache, and sweat. Just one day out of the blue, then it was gone and back to normal.

So he finally went and got tested today...awaiting the results. Is there any chance he will test negative? If he tests negative then what does that mean? How did I get infected? Is there any chance he could have had HSV1 with no real outbreak and still infect me and test negative?

It's been 12-14 days since the first lesion and I finished my ten day course of valtrex two pills twice a day, yet my primary lesion(s) still has not fully healed and it's itching lately. Is this normal course or another breakout taking place? I have an appt with my ob/gyn in a week(the earliest they could fit me in)

It is normal. The primary can take awhile to heal and itching at this stage of healing is very normal.
Thank you very much, the itching came out of nowwhere. I called my ob/gyn and asked her to put be back on Valtrax, who is going to call in the order to my pharmacy.
It's a good idea. I hope your back to feeling better soon.
So far seems fully healed and everything back to normal. Hopefully it stays that way. Thanks for all your help and advise!

I will be happy to address your questions and concerns. First of all I'm sorry to hear about the pain your in. As you know hsv1 can have a very harsh painful outbreak. That being said hsv1 will have few recurring outbreaks and some folks never get another one. Hsv1 has way fewer genital outbreaks than hsv2. Your boyfriend obviously has oral hsv1 and that's how you have genital hsv1. The good news is you won't give him hsv1 on his genitals. Once you have the infection in one area your body builds antibodies that give you a kind of immunity from getting it elsewhere. You won't ping pong the virus back and forth.
This also goes for any future partners who get cold sores.
Not only does hsv1 of the genitals have few outbreaks it also sheds very little (infection at the surface when no symptoms are present) the odds of you ever spreading it through vaginal Intercourse is slim. Daily valtrex cuts the shedding down by half and condoms are effective as well.
I know it doesn't seem like it right now but hsv1 is a minor thing. Remember well over half the population has oral hsv1 and half of all new genital infections are hsv1. I wish you a speedy recovery. Let me know if anything isn't clear or you need more info

Thank you so much for the response. I appreciate it, I have been doing a lot of research but still helps to hear it from someone else. If he has HSV1, it should show up on his blood test right? I am ready for this first outbreak to be over, it's been going on ten days now. :( Anything I can apply down there to make it heal faster or the burning pain lesser?
He should test positive. That being said the igg test for hsv1 isn't as accurate or sensitive as the hsv2 igg. The test can miss at least one out of ten infections.
There really isn't any relief from your primary outbreak. The valtrex helps. Try and take it easy and it will be over soon.
Thank you very much, it feels like I am getting over the outbreak been going on ten eleven days now, I've lost count. I went to my local GNC and bought this L-lysine ointment and applied it down there, it has menthol and some other vitamins and it really gave me relief. I am also going to buy some tree oil as well for future outbreaks. Then going to talk to my OBGYN about staying on suppressive therapy.
I am glad you found some relief.
OK, one last question! He keeps putting off getting tested, several weeks. Will it still show up in his blood test? Thanks!
The time frame won't affect his test. The antibodies will be there forever.
Thank you very much!!!
